Meet Trailblazer Michelle & Watson Murphy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle & Watson Murphy.

Michelle and Watson, please share your story with us.
Hi, woof! I’m Michelle, with my dog Watson, of Watson & Walls.

We are conquering the world’s most dog-friendly spots, one mural at a time – a.k.a. running the blog https://www.watsonandwalls.com/ and filling it with dog-friendly travel guides, including all the best murals in each location.

Watson is a rescue bichon-Maltese mix and I (Michelle) have a background in marketing and advertising, as a Senior Producer at creative impact agency, enso.

I’ve always been interested in travel and social media, hoping to fuse them together but unsure of what made my brand special. A little over a year ago, a photo I posted of me and Watson in front of a mural got a lot of traction, which is when I realized this cute ball of fluff could be a superstar. Since then, we’ve traveled to Mexico, countless states, and most neighborhoods in LA, blogging about our adventures!

Has it been a smooth road?
This has not been a smooth road & there’s still so much of it to navigate!

Growing a blog and Instagram following is not as easy as it looks. It’s definitely not taking selfies and sleeping in :). There are every changing algorithms to keep up with, and new social media platforms to dabble in.

Something that has helped me immensely is creating real relationships with people in your field! I’ve met so many other wonderful dog moms who have helped me grow and learn about what strategies to take. No person is too small or big to try to work with, so try to find a mentor or friend that you can navigate your career with.

The other advice I would give is to have fun with it! Especially, when your life revolves around likes and numbers, you have to remind yourself why you did this in the first place. Making your passion your work isn’t easy, but it’s worth it!

We’d love to hear more about Watson & Walls.
As mentioned before, our blog focuses on dog-friendly travel spots & murals. I travel all over with Watson – from Mexico to Nashville to Lake Tahoe – and document the best places to eat, drink, stay & play. I’ve recently started moving into using google my maps as well so that people can download my map as they explore a city themselves (check out the Arts District guide here: https://www.watsonandwalls.com/arts-district-guide

In terms of what I specialize in, I’d say we are the mural King & Queen of dog Instagram! I’m most proud of the number of walls I’ve inspired others to find. It brings me a ton of joy each time someone DMs me about a wall or with a picture of a wall they found! Also not that they pay me – but I’m personally obsessed with La Croix, and have had a few people DM me that they tried La Croix because of me ;)!

I’d say what sets me apart from others is my keen eye for matching a product to a wall. Check out this post I did for K9 Sport Sack (no joke the best product we own) https://www.instagram.com/p/BknPA7rFQ6p/ – I’ve cultivated a very specific look and have grown to love searching for the perfect wall for each post. Watson & I also travel extremely well together, which is rare to see a dog with as many frequent flyer miles!

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
Oh my god, yes! I make it a point to listen to a podcast every morning on my way to work, and cannot recommend Second Life by My Domaine enough. Each week, Hilary Kerr (one of the Who What Wear founders) interviews a woman who has switched careers drastically – i.e. Sprinkles founder Candace Nelson who used to be an investment banker.

Also, a big fan of any Ted Talks business or Science Vs. episode!
