Meet Trailblazer Nicole Cheever

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Cheever.

Nicole, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been doing hair for about 12 years and I had been in one location for about 10 years then moved to Long Beach for a year and now, I have been in San Diego for about 3 months at Whispers Salon in Bankers Hill. I just married my husband in Oct who is in the Navy and stationed here. So, I am rebuilding my business here!
I started doing hair right out of high school. Starting your career at such a young age brings many challenges. Challenges that have molded me into the stylist I am today. When I was a kid, I would always style my younger cousins hair and I was into coloring my hair so becoming a hairstylist felt right. Today, though the reasons I love doing hair is that I get to meet so many great people, I would never otherwise have the opportunity to meet. These people become like family. And I get to make these people feel beautiful every time I see them!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have faced many challenges in my business. Being so young starting out I didn’t have any idea how to run a business. I didn’t understand taxes, how to price things, how to book keep. I didn’t understand balancing work life and social life. I was very complacent for a long time. Then, time goes by so fast and then, you realized you haven’t gone anywhere. I was always juggling multiple jobs trying to figure it out. Once I started putting all my effort into my career and taking it seriously is when I felt more successful. I think it’s very important to keep educating yourself. Never stop learning. Surround yourself with like-minded people. Ask lots of questions. Don’t let your doubts get in the way of your success.

We’d love to hear more about San Diego Hairstylist.
