Meet Trailblazer Nora and Kate (Lynch) Leeney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nora and Kate (Lynch) Leeney.

Luminous Life was created by two sisters that developed a passion at a young age to live a healthy, sustainable lifestyle. Nora was always the fitness guru growing up while Kate was the foodie of the family.

In her high school and college years, Nora always thought that the longer she worked out, the better results she’d see. She eventually learned that she was SO wrong and it only took her about 10 years to realize it! When she started her professional career, she no longer had an hour plus to workout a day and knew that there had to be another way. She decided to take her love for fitness to the next level when she got her certification as a Personal Trainer & Fitness Nutrition Specialist. She began teaching group fitness classes focused on Metabolic Effect Training at Bird Rock Fit, a local gym in La Jolla. This was the best decision she ever made because it pushed her to actually learn HOW to exercise and get an effective workout in just 30 minutes. She began incorporating more HIIT and weight lifting into her workouts and it transformed her body. Not only did it change her body, it changed her life because she had more free time and mental space for the things she loves – going to breweries with her friends, traveling the world, pretending she can surf, exploring the outdoors, taking a ukulele or pottery class at a community college after work (yes, completely factual), and if she feels the need to – lay in her bed for half the day doing absolutely nothing. Nora wanted to create a way to help others in her community find the same exact thing – balance so they can have as much fun as possible in life while still feeling amazing in their own skin.

Kate has always loved food. If you ask her husband, family, or friends, they will tell you that she has never been a girl who loves salads. You couldn’t pay her to eat tons of vegetables and most fish kind of freaks her out. When she first turned to macros, she had just got engaged and really wanted to lose weight for her wedding. She knew that it would take work and require serious dedication, but she was ready to feel and look great on the special day. What she found from this new approach was the ability to eat what she wants and still lose weight. Kate has found ways to make her favorite foods healthier and aims to look at Whole 30/Paleo foods in the process. She enjoys cooking and wants to share her recipes with the world. Kate has studied macronutrients for over three years and through trial and error has found what percentages work best with macros depending on specific goals and how they affect your progress in different ways. Whether her clients want to be leaner, have more muscle tone, or gain weight, she has a passion to set them up for success and make it as simple as possible.

Because Nora and Kate both work full time, they decided to take their passion to the online business space in hopes of reaching more men and women. They offer a 12-week workout guide and 6-week customized nutrition plan designed to get clients in the best shape of their life without having to spend hours a day at the gym and while still eating all the foods they love. Luminous Life was launched in early 2019 and has been growing rapidly. Nora and Kate are excited and eager to continue to help more people in the community that have had similar struggles in the past and are ready to live a healthy, sustainable lifestyle!

Has it been a smooth road?
Following your dream is rarely a smooth road in our opinion. One of the biggest struggles along the way was carving out time to create both the fitness guide and nutrition plans while still working full time. Sometimes all you want to do after work is lay on the couch and watch movies! Our advice is to JUST START! It can be overwhelming, but start by looking at everything you do during the week and map it out – this includes how much time is spent meal prepping, watching tv, working, scrolling through social media, commuting, everything! Find just 3-5 hours a week, in the beginning, to make small steps whether it’s dedicating 30 minutes a day on your lunch break or waking up an hour earlier in the morning, there is a way.

Another struggle has been navigating the pressure of dealing with something else outside of our daily obligations and routine. We have never wanted this to turn stressful, so we try to remind ourselves to do what is fun for us and makes us feel good! Promotion has been the most difficult aspect of our business, so we both take extended breaks from this at times when it starts to feel too overwhelming. We still dream big, but try to release the outcome and believe that as long as we’re having fun and helping the community, then we are succeeding.

We offer a 12-Week Fitness Guide and 6-Week Customized Nutrition Plan. We recognize that people in the community find challenges with either maintaining a fitness regimen long-term or struggle with eating healthy consistently, so we wanted to make sure we offer products that satisfy both needs.

Our 12-Week Fitness Guide includes over 120 strength circuits, a core burnout for each day, 50+ HIIT exercises for an optional cardio add-on, weekly challenges, exercises modification recommendations, demo videos for 300+ exercises, a progress log, and access to a private Facebook accountability group. The workouts require minimal equipment and can be completed at home. One of the best parts is that it can be customized to anywhere from 30-60 minutes!

The nutrition plans include your customized macros/calories based on individual goals and dietary restrictions, 6 weeks of meal ideas (breakfasts, snacks, lunches, and dinners), detailed directions on how to use the app, access to a private Facebook accountability group, and grocery list ideas. After the initial 6-week cycle, there is an option to continue up to cycle 4!

We are most proud of how personalized our services are. It’s not just a business where you buy a product and never hear from the creator/business owner again. We are in communication with all of our clients and have weekly check-ins to make sure they’re successful in reaching their goals and can offer additional tools to get them there. This is so rewarding because we develop personal relationships and feel the joy when we receive a text or email that says, “I finally fit into those pants that have been in the back of my closet for years!”

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well-positioned for?
Women tend to be so full of passion! There is something deep down in the heart of every woman and that is their dream whether they have the courage to pursue right now or not. We also believe women have an innate need to want to help each other out. Just because someone else has already done it, that does NOT mean there is not still space for you! Women have the opportunity to collaborate more and exchange skillsets to help each other grow and learn.
