Meet Trailblazer Ragen Dodson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ragen Dodson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ragen. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was 12 years old, my grandparents bought me my first Apple iMAC Desktop computer. You know, the clear humongous bubble ones. I started exploring creating digital artwork on the computer and taught myself how to ‘design’ and utilize software to create my vision’s digitally. I had no idea that there would ever be such a career path for this, heck I wanted to be an Astronaut. As I got older, and started taking art, photography, & web-design courses in high school, my teacher, Mrs. Wilson told me I had a talent and that I could actually go to college for “Graphic Design”. I was in disbelief, but started researching and sure enough, she was right. I ended up going to Indiana University-Fort Wayne and graduated with my degree in Visual Communication & Design in 2016. I have worked for several companies, a start-up beauty company tailored to black women, and also a couple Fortune 500 companies. I have worked in corporate finance, banking, and design. Although those jobs got me where I am today, I was not truly fulfilled working for someone else. I wasn’t truly fulfilled having someone above me telling me when I could be sick (use sick time), when I could take a vacation, or simply have ‘mental time-off’. It just didn’t seem feasible for my mental heath, future, and freedom. I knew I had to make a change. In January of 2018, I decided to take my business public officially. I took a whole weekend and designed my branding, and launched my website. When I received my first order, I almost fainted. My now fiance, helped me with all the legal documentation requirements while I scoped the branding & identity for my brand. I was still working in corporate finance during the launch of my company, Ragen Ray. I was on the clock in a cubicle while my Shopify account kept going off with sales. The most empowering feeling a woman can have is having complete freedom of who she is, and who she is destined to be. Not a corporation giving you a dense career path, but being able to pave the way for yourself, in your own business, where you make the rules. When the universe blesses you with a skill or craft, that feels ‘natural & organic’, trust in that and make the best out of that skill or craft because it is true to who you are and what you are destined to be.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My road has definitely not been smooth. It has been twisty, roadblocks, climbing over mountains, and a lot of moving around the country to find what my heart yearns for as far as my career. To the younger women out there, my best advice is to follow your heart. I know that sounds cliche but it’s SO true. If your career path takes you to California, like mine did right after undergrad, go for it! Save money for whatever may happen. You never want to miss out on a solid opportunity. Take chances, and let your risks turn into rewards.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Ragen Ray Brand Agency – what should we know?
I am the Chief Marketing Officer & Founder of Ragen Ray LLC. I am best known for my social media strategies that boost organic growth on business pages on Instagram. I use several tactics that work well for my diverse group of clients. I am most proud of my resiliency when it comes to my brand. I always find a way and push through in any obstacles my business my face. I also am proud of my clientele. They are absolutely amazing, especially the women I work with month-to-month. They are so brave and want to pave the way for themselves and I am so happy that I can help them achieve their visions for their brand.

Which women have inspired you in your life?
My mother has definitely inspired me. She taught me at a young age to always be independent. To always hold myself to a higher standard and that I am destined for greatness. My mother went through a lot of struggles during my lifetime just so that her kids could have what she didn’t have. That is the definition of a hero. I am forever indebted to my mom for her sacrifices. She is truly my best friend. My Aunt Sis, & Aunt Marilee also inspire me because they are the epitome of hard-working, resilient, and optimistic women. Without them, I would not have the mindset and determination that I have now. I grew up with a bunch of hard-working, classy, and determined women. I will forever be grateful.
