Meet Trailblazer Sade Prisila Preciado

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sade Prisila Preciado.

Sade Prisila, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started experimenting with makeup about three years ago. I wore makeup in high school but it was awful! Looking back at photos, I laugh at my emo scene queen heavy black eyeliner. But even back then, I felt that the makeup I wore made me feel powerful. I started to experiment with colors, designs and even glitter! I practiced every day with a new idea or a new look. I love to play with color, bright and bold is my way to go! I get a lot of questions about my confidence and how I can be so comfortable in colorful looks, Everyday is a new chance to live life to the fullest, if you want to do something, JUST DO IT! When I’m remembered, I want to be known for having the most fun with my makeup.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My journey has not been easy! I’ve battled with my mental health for 15 years now (I’m 22). There are days where it’s like my mind has a literal wall blocking where my creativity lives and I cannot think of a concept I’m 100% happy with. A lot of the time, I catch myself comparing myself to others and feeling that I’m not good enough. Social media, unfortunately, can make us feel compelled to showing off only the perfect moments. The feeling of having to be perfect every single time and creative is draining! The best advice I have for others, especially younger women, is to disconnect every once in a while. Log out or even deactivate your social media accounts and give your mind a break. Removing myself from social media feels like a cleanse for my mind and soul. I don’t have the constant reminder of ‘having to be perfect’ or ‘having to be creating and constantly posting’. For those who are at the very beginning of their journey, my best advice is to DONT STRESS OVER THE SMALL STUFF! Remember that creativity and artistry are meant to be fun and because we love creating, don’t force it, ever.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Mermaidthuglife – what should we know?
As much as I love all things makeup, nothing is worth the cruelty of any animal. I’m a strong believer in a cruelty-free lifestyle, cosmetics, and everyday products included. I try to help educate those trying to make the cruelty free move. The more people are educated and know how exactly their favorite products are tested on voiceless animals, I hope it helps someone think twice about supporting a brand who isn’t CF. Make the choice! Your voice is powerful! And your hard earned money is even stronger.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
My best advice is to be honest and know your worth. Everyone you meet won’t always have your best interest in mind so remember who you are and don’t settle for anything less than what are you asking. Also, always remember to be kind. At the end of the day, there’s room for EVERYONE to succeed. I know my worth, and I know how much my work and effort are worth.
