Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Strome.
Sara, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began my career with passion. I’ve always been passionate about writing and photography. Social media included both! I started my career as an intern for an online newspaper, where I would write encouraging articles and create graphics to post on behalf of the well-known newspaper. My internship then turned into a content specialist job, with an emphasis on writing and content creation. I then became the social media specialist for a coffee shop and a bakery where I enjoyed and appreciated the space to really think out of the box and find new, innovative ways to share not only a product but a story. I learned early on, that people remember a story more than a brand, and this would actually make their brand come alive.
After working for corporate companies for two years or so, I decided to take a risk and start my own social media company where I offer services such as photography, writing, consulting, and social media, of course. It has been an incredible journey to build my own brand, and get to freelance for various companies in San Diego including Joybaked, Triolo Realty, The Male Williams foundation, Armed services YMCA, and various restaurants in the area! I feel so blessed to get to learn more about other people (one of my favorite part about this job are the people I meet), and find out their stories, what they love, what drives them, what brings them passion. It is a passion of mine, to share other people’s passions. I’ve found that at times, companies aren’t sure how to do this in a way that authentically portrays who they are and they reach out for help to have a strategy for what to post on social media, how to share who they are, how to properly share a product to a consumer, so that’s where I come in and help to get their stories out through photography, writing, and in turn, social media. I have seen companies increase sales by 60% by doing effective digital marketing with them. It is a joy for me to write and serve the community in this way. I love to see people and businesses thrive and unlock their full potential, and creating content to do so, is fulfilling, exciting, and I’ve learned so much about business, the world, different cultures, and food, in the process. I would love to help you share your story to the world – one photo (and caption), at a time.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but it has been worth it. Starting a company comes with many thoughts including the following:
Am I shooting too high?
Is this even possible?
What about security? Benefits?
What if this doesn’t work out long term?
Social media is an amazing tool for businesses and non-profits, it can be a place of encouragement or a place of comparison, and not “measuring up.” Working in this field, you’re the first to hear about world news, who are getting married, having children, who got a house, etc., so it is important to not only cheer others on but remember we only see a small part of their highlights on social media. It is important to set boundaries, yes even with the internet! This will bring peace of mine, and a calmness when you realize you don’t always have to answer to the notifications right away, 24/7.
Owning a business is tough at times, but also rewarding. The truth is, there are no promises in life, but I’ve learned to set goals and also not look too far ahead at the future, but enjoy where I am today, and work hard today. There are other projects I’m working on too such as they encourage women’s podcast, writing a book, juggling friends, family, and church, so it is challenging at times to balance it all, but when I strategize, PLAN, stay involved in my church community and take time for myself every week, the sky is the limit!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about CreativCollective – what should we know?
I am a social media strategist. I specialize in creating content for businesses and non-profits including photography, writing, blogging, and social media. I have also consulted for businesses and helped them find a strategy that best fits their goals. I am most proud of seeing companies grow in their revenue, and have a solid, aesthetic, friendly, and engaging brand to share with anyone who comes across it. Something that sets me apart, is that I am a story-teller. This was where my passion began, and this is what I’ve seen increase brand awareness naturally. By sharing stories, rather than just trying to sell, sell, sell, people want to know more about you. They remember a story, not another ad in their feed. This has set me apart from other social media strategists because I have really nailed how to share a story in a way that is compelling to the consumers.
Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
I love to listen to anything by Gary-Vee, Jenna Kutcher, and the authentic you women’s podcast. All three of these podcasts have encouraged me not only in my job but in my personal life too. I also attend the social media examiner conference every year, which has really given me some great tools to use and practical ways to create content in the most effective way possible.
Some of my favorite books are Mere Christianity by CS Lewis, anything from Brene Brown, and I’m currently reading Crazy Love by Francis Chan. Books help me grow personally, and are a great outlet to find a place to rest with a field and a hammock close by.
