Meet Trailblazer Selina Murdy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Selina Murdy.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Selina. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story begins at 15 when I tried to get my first job but was too young to hire. This sparked the entrepreneur inside of me and I created and ran my own cake and cupcake business all throughout high school into the start of college. I learned that you cannot wait for someone to give you an opportunity. Sometimes, you need to go out and make that opportunity for yourself, and that is what I did. I attended the University of California, Santa Barbara and obtained my Bachelor’s Degree in Communication. While working towards my degree, I was also working for an event planner and learned everything I could from her. She took me under her wing and taught me the in’s and out’s of the business eventually gifting her business to me. I am now the Owner and Lead Event Planner for my company Smith & Murphy Events. Event planning is my absolute dream job and I could not see myself in any other job.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Absolutely, do not give up! I am still in the thick of my journey and always keep fighting towards my end goal. Set your goals and go for them no matter what the setbacks or no matter who stands in your way, When I was in high school I was not sure what I even wanted to do with my life. I had the ambition to go to college and graduate but beyond that, I had no idea what kind of job I would end up with. I just knew that I wanted my job to always be something new and interesting outside of a normal 9-5 office job. When I found Event Planning, my journey in the life of different jobs and life experience all fell in line for this business. By no means is being a business owner an easy thing, in any field, but when you have the passion and determination to succeed no matter what you are doing you can make it.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Smith & Murphy Events – what should we know?
Smith & Murphy Events is an event planning company specialized in Southern California. We do all types of events: weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, bridal showers, and baby showers. As a wedding planner, I am always excited for every single event because with each new couple comes an entirely new vision and personality that creates the event. Throughout the planning process, I get to know each of my couples and display them as a couple through the entire event. Smith & Murphy Events is a high-end event company that gives the utmost care and quality to every event that we do. From the moment you book with us, we are with you every step of the planning process. Day of the event, my team and I are the first ones to arrive and the last to leave work more than 16 hours some events. As an event planner, it is my job to oversee the event and make sure that it runs smoothly according to my timeline. Every event thrown is for the purpose of enjoyment. Why stress out about planning fun for months if not years if you can avoid that and hire an event planner who knows how to relieve that stress. I am proud to own and be the lead planner of Smith & Murphy Events, I know that I can grow the business and bring it to new heights.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Women face many challenges every day in just daily life and in the workplace. It is not all bad because we have Lady Bosses and women who make opportunities for themselves. Women are positioned for anything that we put our minds to and make happen and whether that be in STEM or the Arts we can make those opportunities for ourselves. I am fortunate to be in a mostly female dominated industry of event planners. I knew what I wanted to do and I went for it and fortunately, I was given a chance to prove my worth from the women before me. Society has proved it time and time again that women will never be seen as equals to men but that has never stopped our drive and passion to outwork and outperform our male counterparts. No matter what job interests you, go for it and do the best work you can do.
