Meet Trailblazer Skylar Poteet

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skylar Poteet.

Skylar, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started wearing makeup when I was in 7th grade and pretty much right away, I became really interested in it and how the different products applied on the face made such a difference in my appearance. For a few months after, I started wearing makeup, I didn’t fully know what I was doing, but I still had a lot of fun doing my makeup. In 8th grade, I discovered the beauty community on YouTube, and I became obsessed with watching different beauty videos; and watching these beauty videos is what really made me fall in love with makeup and learning how to do different looks! During the summer of 2017, I took a makeup class called Vanity Makeup in LA and at the end of it, I received my certification, and I can now call myself a professional makeup artist! Along with starting my business, I also began to post more makeup looks on my instagram account @makeupbyskylarpoteet, and I can’t wait to create more looks and I hope to grow my following and my business further.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey in creating my business and growing my instagram following hasn’t been the easiest. I have struggled because in the midst of trying to grow my business and getting more appointments, I have been in school and that in itself has taken a lot of my time, so it has been hard to find time to try and create more looks and work on getting myself out there. Although I have struggled with managing my time because of being in school, I am excited to say that I only have one more semester left, so after that, I will be able to have more time to build my business. Until then, during my last semester, I will definitely try my best to set aside as much time as I can to create more looks and schedule appointments.

My advice to younger women wanting to start there own makeup business is to try not let other people get inside your head and tell you that you can’t do something. I have been trying to tell myself this every day; “If you work hard enough for what you want, every day, you will get closer to getting it”.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Makeup by Skylar Poteet – what should we know?
I create makeup looks and post them on Instagram and I am also a freelance makeup artist. I would say that I am known for an extremely highlighted skin. My favorite thing to do is to apply a matte foundation and set it with powder (because I have slightly oily skin) and then I pile on the highlighter to make my skin look super glowy. Doing this technique ensures that my makeup will last longer because my foundation is matte and it is set with powder, but I still get that glowy, healthy-looking skin appearance after I apply my highlighter!

What sets me apart from others is that I am extremely passionate about doing makeup and I am really good at making connections with my clients to make them more comfortable for me.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I haven’t always been the hardest work, but around the time I turned 17, I started working really hard in school and I became more motivated to work harder for myself and what I want in life and I think that if I keep that same motivation, it will lead me to success.
