Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydni Fox.
Sydni, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I still remember getting out of dance class and waiting at my mom’s spa for her to be done with a long day. I would sit and watch the hairstylists in “aw”. I loved watching a client come in frazzled, after a crazy day of work and leaving so relaxed and feeling like their best versions of themselves. As soon as I could, I signed up for Cosmetology Vocational School! I danced and styled my way through college at Kent State University and then made the move to NYC after graduation.
There, I worked at Rita Hazan Salon where I was inspired by the art form and most importantly, NYC helped me realize the kind of hair stylist I wanted to be.
I wanted to cultivate relationships and help bring out the confidence that one might not see. I realized that I wanted a different environment… something new. After a couple amazing New York years, I packed up and moved to San Diego!
Here, I found a beautiful community through yoga. I went through Yoga Teacher Training at Corepower Yoga in 2016… just for fun. Effortlessly, I kept moving forward… loving every second of it! It didn’t take me long to realize how complimentary hair styling and yoga were. As soon as I began teaching at Sojourn Healing Collective, I knew I found something magical.
Being able to cultivate a safe environment for students to practice vulnerability in a yoga class makes my heart burst! I love to bring that mindfulness into the salon. Creating a space for change, growth and some damn pretty hair!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The journey has definitely been a challenging one. I’ve had to completely regrow my business… 3 times! Once in Ohio, once in NYC, and then now here in San Diego. There were absolutely moments of “what the heck am I doing?” I was pretty lost at first.
Then, I found my yoga mat and while practicing what I call “moving meditation” I found my inner voice, confidence, and strength.
I’m so grateful for my amazing clients in the salon and the humans at Sojourn Healing Collective. I know it’s overdone… but seriously, “your vibe attracts your tribe”. Be patient, work hard, be yourself, surround yourself with inspiring people. You never know when the next exciting thing is right around the corner!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Hair by Sydni Fox @ StudioNN – what should we know?
I specialize in multidimensional color and curly hair. I LOVE creating a color that compliments my guest’s skin tone and makes their eyes pop!
I live for getting to know everyone and working together to be sure that their new hair will complement their lifestyle.
Sometimes, I can be too honest. If I don’t think that a color will look fabulous on someone or if it would comprise the integrity of the hair… I will absolutely talk about it. I want everyone to love their hair and have all the facts!
On the yoga mat… I LOVE creating a juicy Vinyasa Flow. “Choreographing” breath to movement, with my favorite music, in a beautiful studio, holding space… it all sets my soul on fire!
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
In theatre, we would welcome the audience in after a crazy day. Let them turn off for a couple hours. Whether they were at Guys and Dolls or A Winters Tale, I loved being able to give them an escape. A place to laugh, to ponder, a little recharge. I get the same feeling in the salon AND in the yoga studio. Finding the passion for holding space at a young age has truly shaped who I am today.
