Meet Trailblazer Tara Nelson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Nelson.

Tara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always loved doing hair since I was a lil girl. I LOVE making women feel there absolute best. I worked in a salon doing color and cuts for 10 years and built an amazing clientele whom I absolutely loved and cherished. As much as I loved my clients tho, I realized my true passion was going on site and styling for photo shoots, events, and weddings. So I started doing bridal hair on the side with other companies which was a total joy for me.

However, I found myself way to stretched trying to accommodate my clients at the salon while trying to establish myself as a bridal stylist and co-lead our church (The Station Church) alongside my husband. It was to much! So I knew I had to change something.

Leaving the salon felt absolutely crazy to me and for years I struggled with fear and guilt of leaving my clients. I wondered if financially going full time into the bridal business would even be possible for me, but eventually, I finally did it and was able to officially launch Irresistible Mess the beginning of this year 2018!!

We now have our very own beauty team of hair stylist and makeup artist!! I’m blown away by how blessed our new company has been so far! I’m excited to see what next year looks like. We are growing and learning and I feel like I’m in my lane. 🙂 I LOVE WHAT I GET TO DO!!

Has it been a smooth road?
In the beginning, I struggled with fear if this would even succeed. Could I really make a living doing it? I second guessed myself and compared ALOT!! Thankfully I was blessed with an awesome business coach who really encouraged me along the way and a husband who really believed in me and helped me get started.

I struggled a bit with how to even start. Like what does a bridal contract say? What goes on my website? Who will work on my new team? Will other artists even want to work on my team? It was all so new, but I found that the many women in this industry are willing to help and answer questions. Everyone has to start somewhere.

My advice would be to not let fear hold you back. Just take it step by step and sometimes you may have to take a leap, but just go for it! Don’t over think your decisions. Just because you make one decision doesn’t mean you have to stay there. At first, it may mean you even have to take a few steps back so you can build the momentum to launch forward.

Big decisions are hard and scary but if you don’t ever take the leap you will never know how your dream can unfold. I’ve learned that if you want to change, you have to take the first step. Prayer truly helps as well!

We’d love to hear more about Irresistible Mess.
We are an on-site bridal and event beauty team. We specialize in hair styling and makeup for any big moments in front of the camera. Our mission is to not make each of our clients look IRRESISTIBLE, but also to feel IRRESISTIBLE. I’m most proud of the reviews we receive from our clients. I love that our clients feel at ease and enjoy their time with us.

I love that each of our stylists truly cares about each client and truly want each individual to feel beautiful! Our team is really good at helping to bring any tension from all the different emotions that come on a wedding day down in a room and I feel they bring a lot of positivity into the atmosphere. Our team was handpicked very carefully and I’m confident in each one! They are talented, organized but also very sweet, genuine and personable.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Don’t let fear hold you back or second guess yourself. Just go for it and pray A LOT!

Don’t be afraid to reach out for help and ask questions. I’ve found that most people are willing and wanting to help you succeed. Surround yourself with friends that are going to encourage you along the way and get excited for you. A business coach or a mentor really helps too! 🙂

I few quotes I really love that helped me are “ don’t wait for perfect. Go ugly early.” “keep it simple.” And “choose Grace. Often.” I also believe if you put God first the rest will all fall into place. =)
