Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis Johnson.
Travis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The story of our clinic actually begins when I was in undergrad. I was studying biology during the day and working graveyard shifts as an EMT at night. It didn’t take long, even as a young EMT rookie, to realize that our medical system was failing Americans. Medicine as I knew it didn’t really have anything to do with being healthy. I was busy responding to emergency events in which the root disease and cause was PREVENTABLE. Diseases like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and emphysema just to name a few.
This led me to study and ultimately teach human movement as medicine. Along the way, I have met and collaborated with other health practitioners to create a wellness clinic, Your Healthy Spine. Our space is where the community comes to learn, embody, and practice a healthy lifestyle. We know that caring for our mind and body regularly is key to living well and optimally—now and tomorrow. We do it for ourselves and the people we love.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It almost never is, isn’t it? And the bumps are opportunities for growth, telling us there’s more we can do to improve. To be honest I have definitely vacillated between deep frustration and overwhelming compassion. I have wanted to smack the stupid out of patients AND I have wanted to just hold them because there are MANY people who have gone through so much trauma.
We blame an antiquated system. Ever since we were children we went to the doctor when we were sick. It is INGRAINED in our software to care only when we are in pain. If we want to change this model we have to start with the way we see care. The good news is that this disease-reactive approach is giving way to wellness. We are seeing a growing popularity and interest in self-development, resiliency & self-care.
One of the best ways to get involved is in our community classes which brings people together to practice injury prevention, mindfulness and overall awareness of well-being. You can get involved through our website.
Your Healthy Spine Clinic – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What we are really good at is identifying and fixing the root cause of a patient’s musculoskeletal condition or complaint. And you’d be surprise to know that the problem is not always the location of pain. But pain relief is not the only thing we do. People rely on us for rehabilitation, injury prevention, athletic recovery as well as stress relief and resiliency.
We also offer wellness care. Let me elaborate what that means. For a long time, it is uncommon to hear that someone feeling great visits their doctor regularly. That’s because of the disease-care mentality that we talked about earlier. However, if you really look at wellness care and what that means, it’s about proactively caring for you social, physical and mental well-being to feel and live your best every day.
As an integrated wellness clinic, we also offer mental wellness services, massage, acupuncture and naturopathy. After all caring for your health and well-being requires a collective effort.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I am proud to say that we are part of a greater initiative. Our patients, our local community, and the networks in which they work has put San Diego on the map for health and wellness. We are part of that story and we are here to take us all to the next level.
