Meet Trevor Callan of Callan Capital in La Jolla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevor Callan.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Callan Capital was founded in 2007, as a continuation of the wealth management careers of myself and my brothers Tim and Ryan Callan. Prior to Callan Capital, I spent 14 years at a large brokerage firm in a dedicated high net worth division. We founded Callan Capital because we felt that our clients could be better served through the fiduciary model, where the advisor is legally bound to act in the best interest of the client by providing independent, objective advice.

Through one point of contact, Callan Capital provides comprehensive wealth management services in all areas important to a significant estate. Today, we have 12 employees and manage $850 million for about 170 families. We have offices in San Diego, CA and Austin, Texas.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building the business has not always been a smooth road. We started the firm right before the 2008 credit crisis, which proved not only to be a difficult time to launch a business but a difficult time to be in the financial services industry.

In addition, over the years markets go up and down and volatility happens. Some clients have a very hard time with volatility and walking them through these times is challenging because the discussions are always emotionally charged.

Please tell us about Callan Capital.
Callan Capital is an independent wealth management firm that provides financial planning and asset management solutions to executives, entrepreneurs and families. We manage over $850mm in assets across the capital markets for approximately 170 affluent families.

Our team specializes in issues that are important to corporate executives and entrepreneurs who have experienced a liquidity event such as an IPO, recapitalization, merger, or sale of their business. We guide business owners and executives through the process of understanding their compensation packages and thinking strategically about liquidity events.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is spending the summers in Evergreen, Colorado with my grandparents and close family.
