Today we’d like to introduce you to Tricia Schmorde.
Tricia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started with a love for dogs as a very young girl. Seeking out stray dogs and feeding and caring for them Dogs seemed to seek me whenever I would go out peoples dogs would come over to me. I was obsessed with the timber wolf and did many papers and studied them as a young teen and school-age child.
As I got older, I studied dog behavior and training techniques on my own picking up on everything I could. Taking dog training classes with my own dog and seeking out the best trainers just so I could study and watch how they worked with dogs. I wanted to know how dogs communicated the language they understood. I spent a lot of time learning the different training techniques and finding those that were spot on in my opinion as far as getting the message to the dog so they would understand.
I had a natural ability to read and understand dogs’ posture, behavior, glances their communication. I starting raising and showing dogs and became very passionate about it as well as training. I spent years raising and showing dogs but found myself moving to Maui Hawaii and not being able to take my dogs with me, due to quarantine for rabies. I spent two years on the Island of Maui and missing dogs like crazy. I left the Island and moved back to Oregon.
I picked up where I left off — acquired a few top lined European Dobermans and two well-bred Siberian Huskies. I placed the Dobermans with some close friends who wanted to breed and work with them, and I currently mentor their breeding program helping them place their pups and screen potential homes. They are breeding for PTSD support dogs and working dogs. I moved forward with my very small elite hobby breeding and working program with the Siberian Huskies.
Focused and small is where it is it forces you to put only the best quality out there for the breed. I believe in pups being raised underfoot, and man’s best friend being a part of the family. So all of my dogs are part of our family, and all of my pups are raised underfoot. It is hard to find small breeders that are in the home. I pride myself on this.
Man’s best friend needs to be raised underfoot for proper social development. All my dogs are my family members. I have knowledge of genetics and basic obedience training and do this free of charge for people when I have the time. It is a hobby. So this is how Dakine Siberian Huskies of Oregon came to be.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a pretty smooth and very natural road for me other than my health limitations… I feel this is what I was destined to do. My fascination with dogs at a very young age, and how they responded to me even then told of my future. I knew so much from my interest in dogs at such a young age I worked as a Vet Tech for a short while and had good knowledge. I love both people and dogs, so reaching out to my clients has been easy.
After a bad head-on car accident and a life long spinal issue and brain trauma, as a result, it was life-changing. This presents life challenges on its own, but my dogs keep me grounded and upbeat and moving. With any breeding program that is true to the breed, there are challenges and heartache only the best move forward and make even better. I have goals and a true passion for my breed the Siberian Husky. My desire to educate people about the breed and mentor them is also very natural.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dakine Siberian Huskies Oregon story. Tell us more about the business.
My dogs are not my business; this is what makes me different from other breeders, they are my hobby and my passion. I specialize in Top Champion bred Siberian Huskies here in Oregon. My Siberian Husky puppies are raised in my home. Many breeders are not able to do this for it is a lot of work taking dedication with lots of sleepless nights and cleaning, but makes me known for social beautiful dogs.
My pups are kept extremely clean as is my home. I am also known for being very involved with my clients for the life of a dog. You get a Dakine Siberian Husky you have breeder support for the life of the dog I helped create. I know genetics and have hand selected my dogs from specific lines I have studied for temperament and ability and health as well as breeding to the AKC standard set for the breed. With my Vet Tech knowledge and my studies, I am up on nutrition and health for the breed.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I feel lucky for the ability to talk with people and listen and be their informant. As well as my ability to communicate with animals has helped me. Studying dog behavior, genetics and training makes me very well rounded and educated for what I am passionate about.
