Meet Vanessa Ostler of Lovely Day Lens in Poway

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Ostler.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Vanessa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The importance of savoring the good moments in life started for me when I was quite young. My mother is mentally ill and I have watched her slowly lose her mind throughout my lifetime. It’s been a heartbreaking and confusing experience. “One of the hardest things you will ever have to do my dear is grieve the loss of a person who is still alive.” Jeannette Walls, The Glass Castle.

I married my best friend Brian at 19, we quickly had three beautiful boys which is  where my love for photography all began. I was completely obsessed with photographing my babies.

Fast forward 10 years… Having my own photography business is a dream come true for me. My dad is an entrepreneur, and I learned early in life that it takes a lot of diligence, hard work and a little creativity to succeed. Vanessa Ostler Photography is my full-time passion, to which I give all of my heart, constantly striving to create  and capture wonderful people and their dreams.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No not easy at all… but we all have our own journey in life. Growing up in a home with an unmedicated, mentally ill mother isn’t for the faint of heart. I’ve had to overcome a childhood of neglect, PTSD and struggles with dyslexia.

In June 2016 of last year I had my own battle with mental illness, it came out of nowhere. It was the most frightful and truly humbling experience that has only increased my compassion and love to fight for understanding. In a perfect world the stigmatism and shame would be non existent and we would have less suicides, addiction, shootings, and crime.

I  speak openly about my life and personal struggles with mental illness because I have loved ones still struggling… who are sick and unable to speak for themselves. I lost my amazingly smart and stubborn mother because she refused to take medication.

My mom’s strength to fight and endure the life long challenge of mental illness is heartbreaking and confusing. However… her constant striving for life still persists today at a homeless shelter where she lives and works to help serve others in the Florida Keys.

Creating and focusing on the good I see in humanity, is truly one of my life’s greatest joys. Photography has helped to heal and rejuvenate my life and it’s one of my greatest passions. I like to capture the true nature of every couple, family and individual I photograph because I see beauty in everyone.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Lovely Day Lens – what should we know?
Weddings, Families, Lifestyle, Engagements and Special Events are my main focus. As a Fine Art Photographer living in San Diego, California… the gorgeous locations are endless and I love helping clients find the perfect spot to capture their memories.

Capturing timeless photographs with the right ‘key’ components: light, sentiment, movement and design is a little obsession of mine. Some would call that Passion but truth be told… I genuinely value every person I photograph, and every moment that I am behind the camera. Photography enables me to experience and preserve the essence of LOVE that is expressed in our most intimate relationships.

As for business, learning along the way is such a pleasure, whether it’s marketing, design work, sales, or the tricks of photography that are endless….

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Brian, my husband of 11 years and my 3 little boys, Jackson, Ty and Lincoln are my biggest fans and supporters. One of my truest friends Julie Bates, many artists, photographers and family have been inspirations along the way!
