Today we’d like to introduce you to Verónica Hernández.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Verónica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Me being the creator of Be Love Projects and Rodrigo Escobedo (my brother and law) of La Metropolitana got together with my sister and partnered up to open the first Mexican Design Concept Store in Tijuana. We were looking for a space to showcase our brands, so we invited our fellow designers and opened our doors in June 2014 with a total of 12 Mexican brands… fashion, jewelry, furniture, leather goods, home goods, illumination, arte and mezcal.
We wanted to be pioneers in the region, promoting the best selection of Mexican handcrafted objects. Looking for designers that are focusing on rescuing traditional artisan work in Mexico. Now, we can proudly say we have more than 45 brands.
At the end of 2016, we were published on T Magazine from the NY Times as “The store putting Tijuana on the design map” that definitely set us in the eye of every tourist that visits the city as well as many locals.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We struggle because most people compare our handmade one-of-a-kind products to mass-produced products they find in SD. There has always been a challenge to bring people to our store, to convince them to shop local, to inform them about the value of our pieces.
It’s a task we enjoy doing, there is a wonderfull story behind every piece we carry.
Please tell us about OBJECT.
Object is an intercultural platform that promotes Mexican design. We have grown from a small showroom in the red light district that opened by appointment to a twice as big space located in the best are in the city, that opens Monday through Saturday.
We are known for our good taste, for offering a personalized service in an amazing space, for welcoming everybody with a taste of mezcal. We present new designers or artists with an opening cocktail party, this happens every 2 months.
We are proud to be always on top of the list of things to do or places to visit in Tijuana/Baja. We are proud of helping emerging designers to structure their business, promoted their brand, connect them with other retailers, and help them grow as a brand.
We love what we do!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
How I cried for hours to the point that I couldn’t talk when I was 4 years old because my Mom spread margarine on my pancakes instead of putting the square of butter that I was expecting when watching the picture.
I wanted 3 pancakes, dripping syrup around them and a perfect square of butter (never margarine).
Always have had a very specific sense of aesthetics and good taste.
