Today we’d like to introduce you to Vienna Farlow.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Vienna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been interested in women’s health for as long as I can remember. I never wanted to be a doctor, but I enjoyed learning all I could about my body and sharing that information with my friends. In my early twenties, I decided to go off the birth control pill and looked into non-hormonal options. That’s how I discovered fertility awareness, a way of observing and interpreting the body changes in the menstrual cycle that indicate fertility. Reading books like Toni Weschler’s “Taking Charge of Your Fertility” changed my life. I had thought I was informed about my body and how it worked but this book showed me how little I knew and how little I had been taught. I had no idea how the menstrual cycle really worked and no idea that there were observable fertile signs that could be used as a natural form of birth control. This information was both empowering and enraging – it was incredible to gain a new understanding of my body, but I was so upset that no one had told me this growing up.
This experience, along with my deepening interest in doing healing work with women, led me to go back to school to become a Holistic Reproductive Health Practitioner and start The Cuntsultant. My desire is to be a resource to people who want to know more about how their bodies work, how to heal themselves, and how to fully enjoy the experience of having a female body. I love vaginas and the people who have them and my ultimate goal is to create a world full of women enthusiastic about their bodies.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s certainly been challenging but, in a growth-oriented way. I’m lucky to have a lot of support from my family and friends in pursuing my vision and have been fortunate to have had really positive responses to my work so far.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the The Cuntsultant story. Tell us more about the business.
The Consultant is your vagina’s consultant. If you have questions, let me help you find answers. These can be questions about anything relating directly to the vagina (like periods) or tangential topics (like birth control options). I don’t like to call myself an expert, but I do know a few things that can help get someone started. A core tenet of my business is referring out to other practitioners and experts who can be more helpful in addressing someone’s specific needs. I’m not a doctor and I do not give medical advice, but I can help you figure out what you need to talk to your doctor about. I teach the Justisse Method of Fertility Awareness, a symptom-thermal fertility awareness charting method. It is an excellent method not only for natural, non-hormonal contraception and conception, but also for learning more about your body. As a Holistic Reproductive Health Practitioner, I help people understand and interpret their charts to achieve their individual fertility goals. The menstrual cycle is the 5th vital sign of the body and charting your cycle can give you a wealth of information about your health. In Justisse, we call this “body literacy” and gaining this knowledge is invaluable. I am also certified by and a member of the Association of Fertility Awareness Practitioners (http://www.fertilityawarenessprofessionals.com/). Additionally, I also offer vaginal steaming (otherwise known as v-steams or yoni steaming) plans, abortion doula services, and workshops on how to use a speculum to see your own cervix.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I definitely consider myself to be a lucky person. I’ve been lucky to have great support from my family and friends. I’ve been lucky to have amazing teachers and mentors who have been doing this kind of work for many years. I’m grateful that I live in a time and place where people are interested in learning more about their bodies and breaking taboos. I feel privileged to be in the company of so many other women doing similar work in San Diego.
