Meet Vincent Maruca of Prime Sports Sales & Design in South Bay-Chula Vista

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vincent Maruca.

Vincent, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started the company out of my house in 1999 while I was teaching Biology and Anatomy at Horizon High School in San Diego. I rented our first location of 1500 sq. ft. in 2003 and hired our first employee while I was still teaching full time and running the business evenings and weekends. I 2005, we moved into a 3,000 sq. ft. location and in 2008, moved into a 6500 sq. ft. building… at that time, I quit teaching and ran the business full time. From there, we moved into our current 15,000 sq. ft. location in 2013.

We currently have 32 employees which include 6 full-time salesmen (including myself) who sell throughout San Diego County and an e-commerce site that sells throughout the world and we are currently one of the top 5 Adidas team dealers in the United States. Our main customers are High Schools and Clubs but we sell to any team that would need uniforms or equipment. We do not sell retail on our premises and only do so online.

Prime Sports does all decoration in house… screen printing, embroidery, tackle twill, digital transfers, and heat press. We currently have 2 automatic screen printing machines, 4 manual/number printing machines, three 6-head embroidery machines, one, 2-head embroidery machine, 3 heat press machines, a digital twill cutter, and a large-scale digital transfer printer.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been pretty smooth but, of course, when growth takes place so quickly there are bumps. We started with only a single credit card as far as capital and have relatively little debt so funds have always been tight. One of my main goals is to be debt free so we have to be diligent in our collections. Collecting is probably one of the toughest aspects of this business.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Prime Sports Sales & Design, Inc story. Tell us more about the business.
I already covered some of this but we are a full line sporting goods team dealer. We basically outfit teams, whether they are weekend warriors or high school programs or youth clubs. We are the only team dealer in San Diego to offer major lines and do all production in house. I’m most proud of the fact that we have an excellent reputation for being fair and honest and that we have great customer service.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Some will go online but this is a relationship business… most of our customers want someone in town to deal with.
