Meet Whitney Eckis of Eckis Marketing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Eckis.

Whitney, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up, I always wanted to have something that was mine. I come from a family that has owned and operated the same family business for 73 years. It has been through 3 generations of Eckis men and eventually will be left to me to decide its future. The first female to run the chain County Motor Parts. Those are a huge pair of shoes to fill- not to mention that this family chain consists of 7 stores starting our flagship location in El Cajon and carrying all the way out Parker, AZ.

But besides that, my dad always pushed me to pursue whatever I wanted. He was the best. He told me I could do anything. I think that instilled a bit of “head in the clouds” ambition within me. He always supported me and always believed in my dreams.

After I graduated college, I felt really lost (as most college students do) and took a year off work to find myself. I moved back home and was pretty depressed. I had just worked my ass off for four years only to find myself back living with my parents. I took a job as a hostess at a rooftop bar. I double majored in Communication Theory and Business Marketing. This was NOT the ideal after college career. But I met the most amazing people and even made a connection that led me to my career.

After quitting the hostess job to spend a month traveling throughout Thailand. I can back to a job offer from the sales and marketing director from the rooftop bar. They had told me that although they wished they had a position for me, the hospitality group that managed the bar was hiring!

So I took the interview. Got the job. And pretty soon was an independently contracted sales and marketing coordinator. I LOVED it and I still love everyone in that company. I got to work with major brands like Hilton, Starwood Hotels and other amazing businesses within the hospitality industry. The Director of Marketing and myself brought these businesses into the social media space. And we didn’t just set them up, but we grew them exponentially.

From there on, some personal family matters came up and I felt the need to start taking on a position in the family business. I left my amazing career and decided that I would start Eckis Marketing as a small side project until I was fully ready to take the reigns of the family business.

I never made it to County Motor Parts.

Eckis Marketing had begun to gain traction and attention just from a landing page and an Instagram account that showcased my curated iPhone photography.

Long story short, Eckis Marketing happened out of something that I didn’t think would become what it is today. In fact, I quit my amazing hospitality job to go work for my dad and help him to begin his retirement process. I was doing small freelance work for Eckis Marketing on the side and before I knew it – I had 10 clients. I was doing full-time social media management, content creation, website building, tracking analytics, and helping smaller companies elevate their brand in the digital space.

Eckis Marketing continues to grow today and it continues to be shaped into much more than just a Marketing company. This month we are throwing an event called Influence, San Diego that will bring together over 60 of San Diego’s top influencers and small businesses for a special Sunday Brunch that hosts 7 panelists to discuss the means and the making of being a positive influence upon the San Diego community.

Eckis Marketing is growing in ways in which I had never prepared for and it still continues to surprise me. But my team and I have no limits. And I think that’s our goal. Just like growing up with dad – I want to be able to do anything and I don’t want to limit the company to just being one thing.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We will be turning 1 year old on March 22nd. We have had our share of struggles but there is nothing in this world I would rather be doing than running this company and helping others achieve their dreams in the digital space.

Eckis Marketing – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a marketing agency that specializes in elevating brands in the digital space. Our work ranges from social media to branding to online advertising.

I think I am most proud of being collaborative. We always want to work with new people and brands. I am a very competitive person but, as a company, I see our competition as leverage. I think there’s something to be said about the millennial movement of collaboration over competition. I would much rather work with someone and make an amazing connection than try and poach someone else’s client or miss out on an opportunity because they’re my opponent. That’s just bad energy.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Living my dream life. I feel like that’s so different for everyone but mine is being able to take care of my family and others.

I think I have something in DNA that pushes me to prove myself to everyone around me or to show people what I am made of. Giving it my all is my version of success. Leaving no stone unturned or no opportunity not fully taken advantage of. You only get one chance to live however you want – and I want to live a life doing what sets me on fire.
