Meet Dr. Wilfred Baltazar,Jr.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Wilfred Baltazar, Jr.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I moved from San Francisco to Mira Mesa in 1981 as a new dental graduate. I was familiar with San Diego having served in the Navy here in the early 70’s. Mira Mesa was a small community then for the servicemen stationed at Miramar, and Scripps Ranch was being developed. After moving here, I worked in several dental clinics around San Diego while I searched for a suitable place to open my own office. I finally found a location in Mira Mesa near where we lived, and the rest is history. I opened my office on Mother’s Day 1982 and have been in the same location ever since. I am proud to say that I’m now working on third generation patients. It seems strange but with a sense of satisfaction when I see the kids of the kids I used to treat.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

Before I decided to open my own office, I went around to all the dental offices in Mira Mesa and Scripps Ranch to introduce myself. At that time there were only eight offices, and I was told that there were already too many dentists in the area. I decided to go ahead anyway with my plans to open my own place. There are now more than thirty offices within a 5-mile radius.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
To be in business for over 35 years in any profession takes a lot of patience, commitment, and perseverance, even more so in the dental field. Patients are coming in for the most part for a problem and in a lot of situations for pain. Patients of all ages are apprehensive and nervous. I have always done my best to try and gain their trust and confidence and to alleviate any fears with dental procedures. I take pride in comments from patients that claim my injections are the most “painless shots” they’ve ever experienced. I believe my demeanor and attitude along with my many years of experience goes a long way in making my patients comfortable and satisfied.

I still am seeing patients on a regular basis that have been in my office for over 33 years! In fact, I have one patient that I have been seeing every six months for the last 34 years that flies in from Honolulu, Hawaii.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Riding bicycles with friends all day around the neighborhood and countryside.
