Meet Will Chitwood of Dancing DJ Productions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Chitwood.

Will, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all started in 2000 in Colorado Springs, Colorado when a friend asked me to join his DJ business. At the time I was a competitive pairs figure skater for Team U.S.A, but I usually had my weekends free for events. It wasn’t long before I realized I loved DJing!

In 2001, I started my own company, Dancing DJ Productions. In 2007, I retired from competitive skating and decided to move to San Diego, California. I couldn’t resist the Southern California weather, which provided year-round DJing opportunities.

2009 was a big year for me! That year I married my beautiful wife, Chea. Plus, I graduated with a B.A. in communications and a minor in music industry studies from Prescott College’s distance program. I also released an original electronic music album, Journey.

Over the past 16 years of DJing & MCing, I’ve performed at over 1200 events. While I primarily serve the San Diego area, I’ve DJ’d as far away as Chicago and England. I enjoy corporate events, private parties, bar/bat mitzvah’s, and military balls, too.

Over the past 5 years, I’ve been focusing on adding more DJs to better serve a larger number of clients! I now have 7 DJs plus myself and 2 photo booths. We currently perform at around 500 events per year.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I haven’t had any significant obstacles but working through how to develop systems to handle the much larger show count we now handle has been the biggest learning process. Also learning to manage the DJs that work for me.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dancing DJ Productions story. Tell us more about the business.
One of the things that set us apart from other DJ companies is our ability to focus on making the event exactly about what the client wants. We can be very interactive on the mic and leading line dances or in the background playing music.

We’re known for being interactive without being cheesy. People always ask why I’m called Dancing DJ Productions. It’s not because we’re break dancing, although we can lead line dances! It’s because we know how to get the guests up and dancing!

I’m really proud of how all the DJs that work for me are very dedicated and passionate and really get to know their clients!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I would say luck has always been favorable in my life. Usually, if things aren’t working well it’s an area I need to improve in that area of my life. Once I improve, it turns around for the better!
