Meet Wilnisha Sutton of TRU7H in Southeast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wilnisha Sutton.

Wilnisha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m a survivor of human trafficking! If it wasn’t for my praying mother and her insisting I went to school I wouldn’t be the woman I am today! Me changing wasn’t easy but I’m happy I did the hard work to change! I started at Concord Career College to get a quick degree but never worked in that field. I did learn I was smart when I applied myself. In high school, I got 1.0 GPA but at Concord, I got a 3.7 but that wasn’t my passion! Music and speaking were! I always sang and got in trouble for my big mouth growing up. I figured I’d go to San Diego City College for recording arts but then I changed it to communications, so I could work in many
fields. I already had recorded arts experience but taking classes only helped me more! I got 4 positions on campus while I was a student! I used my network for my net worth. I obtain the skill to talk to anyone while I was in prostitution. I gained a lot of transferable skills that have helped me excel past many!

Then, I got into the activist world by canvassing and doing a song on a cd with Pillars of the community! I helped register over 1000 voters in South east, helped the cal gangs get shut down, I worked in my community a lot but the most pe vital point was when I was on the front lines when the police murdered Alfred Olango in El Cajon City. I didn’t go there to be a leader but naturally, I led and the people naturally followed! I spent 50 days out there, lost a job, and my mind a bit! It was extremely draining yet powerful! With the help of my community, I was able to rebuild myself stronger than before. I’m a survivor of life not just certain circumstances

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Most definitely, people like to judge me based on my social media oppose to knowing me in real life!
I’m also a single mother. I’m thankful, I raised my son well and had my families help, but it’s extremely hard at times. Lastly, I live in low-income apartments and I’ve been on welfare for years! It’s tough but I’m resilient

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about TRU7H – what should we know?
I’m an Artivist. I use my artistry and activism to inspire others and as well as speak my truths. I specialize in sharing my past to encourage others future as well as mine! I’m known for my singing and my boldness… many won’t do the things I do!

I most proud that I never allowed my past or finances to stop me from achieving my dreams! I am currently in Ghana for the 2nd time in 3 months. I’ve expanded my brand! Coming to Africa, was my biggest dream and now I’m living it out! I’m set apart because I don’t try to fit in anymore… my goal is not too liked but respected. I don’t care what people think of me…. my number 1 rule in life is to be true to myself. I’m also selfless and fearless I want to go to the darkest dirtiest places and inspire those people. But, I can also go to the elite and inspire them too! I have transferable skilled I gained from my past life that most will never have!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My mother deserves most of the credit! Her love for me is unconditional!!! She is such a strong woman and has challenged me to be the best me! My goal is to keep hearing her say “I’m proud of you” and buy her a house as well as take care of all her finances.

My siblings are my reflections they give me hope and love!!!

My pride of lioness of fearless women I roll with that give me life when I feel lifeless!

My mentors Khalid Alexander, Laila Aziz, Roberta Alexander and many more! They always challenge me like extra parents but they also listen to me and push me when I’m being lazy!

Lastly, my community, SouthEast San Diego, and my social media community!!! The love they give me is priceless.
