Today we’d like to introduce you to Zach Musa and Olivia Mishler.
Zach and Olivia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a medical student studying at St. Matthews University School of Medicine (Cayman Islands) and International Medical Graduate (IMG), while I was applying for US medical residency positions, I identified a flaw in the application process. There was a startling lack of support and standardized program requirements information available, especially the information needed by IMGs. I began by gathering my own list of residency programs, when my friends started asking for my research to help their own program choices. That is when I decided to create a service that offers this information to everyone to ease the stressful and overwhelming residency application process. Since creating Match A Resident in 2004, the company has grown to start providing support during the Post-Match SOAP and the Personal Statement within the residency application.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Overall, the process has been smooth. However, there are some official services involved with residency that were wary of Match A Resident when it first appeared and we had to prove ourselves that we were here to help and here to stay.
Please tell us about Match A Resident.
Match A Resident is an international service that helps medical professionals from around the world pursue their dream of training in the United States. I am proud that the service has grown into a team of people devoted to helping International Medical Graduates. We not only provide residency program lists but also build tools and features in house to better guide our members through every step of the residency application process from A to Z. I am the most proud of the out-of-the-box solutions, systems and services that we have developed that has never been seen before in residency.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I were to start over, I would have sought funding with initial investors early on to expand my team and build the services faster than I did before. However, things happen for a reason and the path I have taken to build Match A Resident has made it the service it is today.
