Meet Zach Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zach Smith.

Hi Zach, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My wife and I were looking for a new start after the pandemic had shaken up both of our careers. She is a hair color specialist, and I run a small creative agency focusing on branding and strategy. We had been looking for an opportunity to work together on a project, and the time off gave us a chance to reevaluate our plans for the future. We decided to create a space where we could both work and have full creative freedom. Half of our space is a boutique two-seat salon for her, and the other half is a retail shop that allows me to showcase my design.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We had an eye out for good locations for our concept, but we weren’t actively pursuing anything. When the perfect spot became available, we had to jump on it with no real plan in place. Somehow, we were able to get everything squared away and open our doors in only 6 weeks.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Our shop features vintage-inspired clothing and workwear. We didn’t want to just create forgettable fast fashion, we wanted to make something with a story. The graphics are drawn by hand. We then cut stencils, and apply the ink by hand, making each piece unique. We’ve also started to incorporate hand-sewn elements into our pieces.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
When you’re building out your space, start small and add on as you go. You won’t know what you need and what works until you’ve actually lived in the space.
