Rising Stars: Meet Anne Schreiber

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Schreiber.

Hi Anne, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I’ve been selling real estate for 10 years. Prior to real estate, I had the following careers (in order): Tour Guide/Aquarist, then Animal Trainer @Sea World, Special Education Aide, K-1 Elementary School Teacher, Fitness Instructor/Personal Trainer, Franchise Director Fit4Mom San Diego.

After the birth of our second child, (during the downturn in the market) – my husband and I lost our home in a short sale. We were devastated and I took it really hard. I felt it was a personal failure and that I was out of integrity with myself. It was a rough time. We were both civil servants, didn’t make much money between the two of us. We had saved over $30,000 – all of this was spent to try to stay in the home. We tried to get a mortgage loan modification unsuccessfully (which was odd b/c my husband was furloughed at the time – the City of San Diego was in trouble as well – this was 2006-2009). So we ended up doing a short sale. We moved from downtown to 4SRanch. We rented a townhome and within 2 months of moving in – the landlords told us they would be moving back at the end of the year b/c they had to short sale as well. My father, who had money to invest and saw the opportunity in depressed home values, decided he wanted to purchase a home for our family to rent so we didn’t have to bump around with young children in tow.

It was during that transaction and purchase of that home, that I saw an opportunity to make a difference in other people’s lives and to become the hero for my family as we were genuinely struggling financially. It took me over a year to get my license – as I was working full time and raising two young children with almost zero childcare (couldn’t afford it). I launched my career with about $5,000 total in the bank. It was a HUGE leap of faith, but I knew how to work hard and I figured if other people could do it – I could too!

I sold 5 homes my first year and barely broke even.
I sold 15 homes my second year.
I sold 36 homes my third year and hired an assistant.

From my 4th year on – we’ve sold more homes each year than the last as I slowly grow a team I’m very proud of. Last year we had our best year ever.

# of licensed team members: 6 (4 sales people) – 2 admin
Total 2020 Compass sales volume: $79,156,299
Total 2020 Compass transaction count: 69

Leadership is profoundly humbling and I learn something new every day. My priority is to focus on helping the members of our team succeed. If they’re succeeding, I’m succeeding. This takes a group of people who are hyper focused on self-growth/self-awareness, humility and relentless hustle and service to the incredible clients who hire us.

Currently we have 7, licensed agents and are looking to add two more salespeople. (This includes 2 licensed support staff.)

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Being the business owner is scary. I wake up unemployed every day like every other real estate agent – but I’m the tip of the spear for 6 other people on my team to earn a living. Managing the budget/cost to run the business, the demand for my time and the stress of that responsibility is an ongoing daily challenge.

The biggest struggle/growth opportunity has been leadership. I’ve made all of the mistakes. Each year I feel like I’m just starting to step into who I need to be as a leader. It’s really humbling – but so fulfilling. Ultimately it’s all about finding the right people and then being the leader they need – to meet their goals. Holding your team accountable to their stated goals, motivating, supporting and ensuring that they are each growing individually as well as collectively to provide the best possible service and results experience possible in San Diego Real Estate.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I own and operate a small real estate team – The Schreiber Team with Compass. We specialize geographically in North County San Diego – from inland to the coast. However, we have many past clients that hire us to sell in Santee, Bonsall, Fallbrook, University City, La Jolla and Downtown San Diego. Our marketing, our 1st class service and detailed process works anywhere!

I lead a team of real estate professionals in residential real estate. We are known for our ethics, integrity and results. I’m proud of the service that we give to our clients, the high standards we have for their care, the protection of their equity and helping clients reach their goals. I think that we are different from most other agents and teams in the industry because we are driven fast in all decisions to serve our clients and not driven by deals. Everything starts and ends with what’s best for our clients. In a sea of agents that want to get homes into contract immediately – we are patient and effective negotiators and create incredible equity opportunities through our understanding of the market and buyer psychology.

How do you think about happiness?
In real estate the simple and predictable things make me happy – (offer acceptance, full contingency release , closing escrow!) With clients – what makes me happy is earning my client’s trust and watching them make GREAT decisions in a negotiation or an escrow. As a business owner, I love to be a part of nurturing careers and dreams with all of the members of my team. One of my team members set a goal to purchase a home in her first year of real estate – and she did it! I love being a part of those personal goals that drive the grit and determination necessary to thrive in a tough business like real estate. With my family – I just love to spend time with them. Our favorite things to do are swim, hike, snowboard/ski, play music, sing, dance, cook and just tease each other and have fun and laugh. Personally (for myself) I love two things – moving (any kind of exercise) and acting. I was a competitive swimmer from a very young age – so I always grew up pushing myself physically. Exercise/Competing has taken many forms over the years from lifeguard competitions to 1/2 and full marathons, paddle board racing, Peloton and hot yoga! I started studying acting two years ago in and am absolutely hooked! It’s fascinating and so challenging and I’ve met the most incredible people. I just love it so much!
