Today we’d like to introduce you to April G.
Hi April, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up, I always enjoyed doing my hair and makeup, anything beauty related had me interested. Out of high school, I enrolled at the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis, MN. At the time, I was 18 years old. I was not completely sure on what I wanted to do but thought since I enjoyed hair and makeup, beauty school seemed like the right path to take. After completing cosmetology school, I knew I wanted to advance my skills in Makeup Artistry. I worked for multiple beauty stores until I landed a role at MAC Cosmetics which was a brand, I always dreamed of working for. I learned so much while working for them; my skills really took off at that point. I continued to practice on clients and friends/family, and there were nights I would stay up late watching makeup YouTube videos. From there I started to do makeup for weddings, fast forward 5 years later and I’m now living in beautiful San Diego and I’ve now made this my full-blown career which I love and enjoy very much!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s not always been a smooth road, there were times where I would think “is this something I could really do as a full-time job?” “What if I fail?” “What if people don’t like my work?”. I think with anything, some doubts will always come to your head, but if you truly enjoy doing something and really just keep pushing and working hard at it, eventually things will fall into place how they should.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a freelance Makeup Artist. I specialize in soft glam makeup looks for any special occasion. I think what sets me apart from others is being a good listener on what look my client is striving for but also giving my input on what would look best with their facial features and also having a positive welcoming personality. My goal with my clients is to enhance their natural beauty!
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Minnesota; I was more quiet and shy as a kid. My biggest interest while growing up was dance class, I was enrolled in dance until I was 14. That was something I always enjoyed doing. Once I started high school that’s when I started doing my hair and makeup more, I think that’s when I realized my love for beauty!
