Rising Stars: Meet Deb Berry of Imperial Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deb Berry.

Hi Deb, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My passion for baking began when I was young. I have always enjoyed it and it has always brought me a kind of peace. Growing up I realized that I could thank people with brownies or cookies. A cake. They loved it and I enjoyed it. I began baking for my kids fundraises and realized that my stuff went quick. That was a big ego boost but more importantly it really helped to plant the seed of hmmm? Maybe I could do this. I decided that I would get a booth at the farmers market and see where it took me. It was a good experience and gave me an idea as to what people are looking for. There was a lil shop that was once a donut shop around the corner from my house. It had sat vacant for 4 years. I drove past that spot daily for years. Decided to check it out. Needed work but…decided to give it a go. With the help of my husband Steve we created a beautiful breakfast/cookie shop that was successful…it required so very much work. 80 hours a week and well my health was suffering, I never had time for family and I was losing my passion. So I decided to stop the madness and get bake to what I LOVE…. baking. I now share a shop with my husband’s print shop. I am licensed to bake at home so I do just that and take in to the shop. I love this program and I must say I am living my best life. I get to do what I love on my terms. It is a win win….

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There were some struggles for sure. From health department hurdles to wondering if we would have the money to keep it all going. I did not take out any loans to start my business. Just decided to go with it and if it worked freaking awesome, and if not I would not owe anybody any money. So that fear was there. Another struggle was the fact that I was not always business savvy. I wanted to be successful. I would put entirely too much on my plate and under sell myself at times. I am a control freak and would not allow others to step in and help as much as they wanted to. So I guess you could say I was my own struggle. So that was definitely a learning experience for me. I learned so much and that has helped to make my sweet li business what it is today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a baker who specializes in cookies. However people are enjoying my cakes, brownies and other items I decide to put out. It took me a long time to say that I am proud of the fact that I did it. I actually have the business that I envisioned. The lil bake shop that is in my neighborhood and only 350 steps from the house I grew up in and still live in today. One of my cookies was featured in San Diego’s best desserts which was cool. One of the most rewarding things about my business is all the beautiful friends I have made.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My biggest support has been my husband Steve. He not only helped me tirelessly with my business he continued to run his printing business. He has always believed in me and what I was capable of. He also did not allow me to “cop out ‘ on anything and taught me that I had to set the way I want my business ran. He allowed me to grow and was excited to see my accomplishments. I could not have done it without him. My sister Sharon was huge and helped me in my shop for basically nothing. She gave me her honest feedback and was always there when I needed her. My boys gave me belief in me. Not just for being their Mom but for what I do. They have always been my biggest fans. My aunt Geri gave me the love of baking. She would give me a recipe and say make it…. and I would. Last I have to give credit to the cookie monsters out there that make what I do so rewarding. They really are what make my business as happy as it is. I really appreciate each and every person that walks through my door. I am truly blessed and grateful.
