Rising Stars: Meet Laura Minor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Minor.

Hi Laura, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up always taking photos. Most years, I would ask for the ‘latest and greatest’ kiddie camera in the toy section. When I got a little older, I thought my photos would only live on my iPod and my phone. It wasn’t until the high school photography teacher let me participate in a class assignment that I realized how exciting photography could be. I then became part of the photo class for a year and a half. During that time, I found my love of portraiture. I would take senior pictures of my friends for fun, even getting paid a few times from their parents. I also became a second shooter for a wedding photographer and would work with them almost every weekend. They would pay me about $40 to be their second shooter for the day, and I thought it was a great gig.

When I went to college, I let photography go to the wayside a little bit. But I started getting interested in couples photography in late 2019. After a few sessions taken and a wedding booked, the pandemic hit. My first wedding booked by myself was rescheduled, but I continued to take couples photos when I could. And I practiced A LOT at home during that time. I took a few online courses to help refine my skills. Then I started booking backyard weddings and elopements in 2020. Those first few events were so so special to me because they really grew my confidence and showed me that I absolutely LOVE getting to photograph wedding days. Throughout the last year or so, I kept working hard (almost every day) to grow my business into something I love, getting to work with amazing people in gorgeous places.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Definitely not! I grew most of my wedding photography business in a pandemic when weddings were such a fluid thing. Sometimes they’re allowed, in some places they aren’t. Or there were so many restrictions, it made the whole photography side complicated. Not only that, but I grew my business while being a college student. I couldn’t give all my time and attention to photography because I had other obligations and other jobs.

Entrepreneurship is such a weird thing. There are so many different aspects of running a business that I had NO clue existed before starting to figure things out.

That being said, having friends and family that supported me made all the difference in my life. I found some other photographers who became some of my closest friends and helped me with parts of business running that I didn’t understand. My family and friends that aren’t photographers have always encouraged me, even if they don’t understand what fully goes into running a business. I could NOT have made it to where I am without these wonderful people!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a wedding and elopement photographer for adventurous lovers based in Southern California, but always willing to travel!

I am inspired by the natural world and the beauty of nature. I truly truly believe that everyone deserves to be celebrated. Being a wedding and elopement photographer is my chance to celebrate the most beautiful thing in the world: true love.

What makes me unique is the experience you get when you book with me. I’m not there just to show up, take pictures and leave. I want to get to know my clients and their stories. I want to capture their love, I want to help them have the perfect day they have always dreamed of having together.

I’ve set up the Laura Minor Photography experience in a way to bring my couples closer together, remind them of all the things they love about each other, and to really take in the moment. All while getting beautiful images to remember those moments by.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Good question. People. People matter most to me and are at the heart of everything that I do.

I get the greatest joy when the people I work with are happy and falling more and more in love.

I know I’ve done my job when my couples love the way they FEEL when on a shoot with me and they can see that emotion in the photos they get back.
