Rising Stars: Meet Marilyn Estrada

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marilyn Estrada.

Hi Marilyn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Baking has always been around me, from my Grandmother making Cemitas from her kitchen in Mexico to my mom teaching me to make my first cake in high school and my family owning a Panadería in Stockton, CA. I truly decided to make baking part of my life in 2011 when I decided to take pastry classes while also working in retail. My classes taught me so much; I even participated in the San Diego Cake show. In 2015, I was a mother of one and expecting a second child when my husband joined the Army and moved to Oklahoma, I was a stay-at-home mom in a new state; that was when I really began my at-home custom baking.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, especially being a military wife, but being part of a wonderful military community in Oklahoma did help me get my work out and build my confidence in my work. My biggest struggle was moving back to San Diego and having to build up my customer base again, especially in a city where there are so many bakers.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a custom at-home baker that mainly specializes in custom cakes. Baking is everything to me. It brings me peace. That is why I do not just make cakes but also make all other kinds of custom pastries; I do a little of everything, depending on the season. Kids love my Cakepops, but I’d say I’m most known for my cakes, especially since they are never dry. My work is what sets me apart from others; since I am a custom baker, my desserts are not just one thing but many. I would say I am most proud of still baking despite of the pandemic and being a wife and mother of three.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
To me, success is when you do what makes you happy. Seeing your work brings delight to others, even if just for a moment.
