Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalia Coronado.
Hi Natalia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a San Diego based natural light photographer. I have been working with local families since 2016, engagements, family portraits, maternity, smash cakes are some of the variety of sessions I specialize in. My love for photography started because of a friend I meet in college (SFSU), who was an art major. She is the one who introduced me to what is now my job and one of my biggest passions. In my late teens, I always remember having a held hand cameras and would love taking portraits with friends. It wasn’t till later when I first started to gain experience that I bought myself the Canon t3i, which was the first camera I had. Till this day, I’ve stuck around with Canon and I currently shoot with an R6 and the 5D Mark IV. Before I decided to make photography my small business, I use to bring my camera to family get together and on trips. Whatever was in my surrounding was basically my subject. The very first paid customer I ever had was my oldest sister and her group of friends, and today I have the pleasure of working with many local San Diego and Tijuana Families.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Thanks to the support of my family and friends, I have been able to grow. Social media is one of the biggest platforms to reach more clients, and I constantly see reposts, shared stories, and references from them. I would say that the majority of my clients are people who are close to me. Even though throughout the years, I have been gaining new clients, and even they have become friends. It’s amazing to take pictures of a newborn, and as the years follow you see them grow through family sessions. Because photography equipment is so expensive. I would say that my biggest struggle has been getting more gear and bettering my equipment; from a news flash, lens, or camera body, it’s not cheap, but with saving and timing I keep adding to my collection to better my photography.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Being a photographer is very rewarding to me. Getting to capture those snip moments that can last a lifetime and having families acknowledge your work really pleases me. I specialize in family sessions such as family portraits, save the dates, gender reveals, etc. I have the patients and charisma to work with others. It can be difficult for some people to be in front of the camera. My biggest goal prior to any session is to bring the model outside their comfort zone, but make them feel comfortable during the session, and capture those candid moments. I think I’m most proud on how far I have come along, not just with starting my business but the progress I have made with my images. You can really notice the difference in the current pictures on how much I have evolved, from the posing to the editing. I take my time to review and learn new techniques by watching tutorials.
My biggest plan for the future would probably be a studio. I’m more of a natural lighting photographer, but one of my biggest goals is to learn more about studio photography and have a place shoot. Going back to school for a Bachelors in Fine Arts in Photography is in mind for me. This is something I am considering to do in the near future, for now I want to continue working with the local families and just put my name out there, continue learning and networking with others.
