Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Knowles.
Lucy, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’m 21 years old (22 on Feb. 18) and I’m a self-taught artist. I was born in North Hollywood to proud parents Brad and Jeannie Knowles. I was raised around the movie, and media industry as my Mother’s side of the family has worked for almost all the well-known studios, Warner Bros, Universal, Fox, Paramount, etc. We moved to Ventura, CA when I was in elementary school and my younger sister was born. I was a very normal dorky kid, but the one thing that always made me feel confident was my ability to express myself and interact with other people through art. I went to Foothill Technology High School where I worked as the multimedia editor for the school newspaper (we had the first online high school newspaper in the country) where I was first introduced to digital media and went on to be the publicity director for student government. I also was actively involved in the art program at Foothill and was encouraged by Justin Fraizer (art teacher) to apply to 5 of the top art schools in the country (OTIS College of Art and Design, Cornish, Pratt College, SCAD, and Academy of Art SF) I was accepted across the board but even with scholarships could not afford to take on that much debt. I enrolled at my local community college and got in touch with a local graphic artist who needed some help around the office, and he took me under his wing and shared with me what he had learned from his 30+ years of experience. I started my own business at age 18 and began freelancing and have been supporting myself ever since. I moved to San Diego in August to attend Platt College San Diego for Digital Media Arts, and I’m currently working on earning a BS in Web Design and AA in Graphic Design.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Now while I absolutely LOVE digital media, traditional art has my heart. I draw every day just to stay sane. My art has ebbed and flowed in many styles, but in the last two years I feel like I have found MY style which I would describe as sexy, colorful and psychedelic, my art is for the badass art junkie, festival fanatic or flat out nerd. My favorite medium to use at the moment is ink and marker on illustration board. A lot of the inspiration behind my art comes from “the beauty within.” What I mean by that is I want each piece of art that I create to have its own personality as well as a piece of mine. There needs to be life to a drawing for another person to relate to it. That being said I do not have a direct message because I want each piece to “speak for itself.” One thing I absolutely love drawing/painting/creating is kickass women. I tend to draw women in a “atherial” style because while I want these women to be “classically” beautiful, I also want them to appear confident, capable and curiosity-peaking.
Just a final note; my art is also heavily influenced by other artists and musicians. I listen to a lot of heavy metal, EDM/dubstep, indie rock, and jazz.
What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
I think there has never been a better time EVER to be an artist. Because of the convergence of media platforms and the growth of small business opportunity due to the internet we’ve never been in higher demand. Look around…art and design are EVERYWHERE. It’s on the sides of buildings, on the cardboard sleeve of your morning coffee, on the wings of airplanes. Artists are taking over the world honestly.
With the mass amount of images and media that the average human interacts with on a daily basis if someone wants to be noticed on the on the internet or around a big city like San Diego or LA their marketing and image better be visually interesting and memorable…and that’s when they hire an artist.
I truly believe that the term “starving artist” is going to be a thing of the past. Artists can market themselves to the world like never before, and we’re being appreciated like never before.
