Conversations with the Inspiring Jordan Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Brown.

Jordan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Since I could remember I wanted to become a Hairstylist. Both my Aunt and Grandma were hairstylists, so I grew up in their salons. It was so fascinating to me how you could totally transform someone in a matter of hours. I went to beauty school straight out of high school and started my path toward my career. While I was in beauty school, I got a job as a receptionist at a very well known salon in Ocean Beach, CA. From there, I watched day in and day out of all the talented stylists around me and fell even more in love with the craft. They specialized in creative color and dreadlocks, which was just mind-blowing to watch. I grew this fascination with dreadlocks and wanted to learn more and more about them. I trained with a few different stylists while still in beauty school to get hands-on experience. Once I became a licensed cosmetologist in 2014, I immediately was put behind the chair. Fast forward five years, I am now certified Dollylocks dreadlock stylist and absolutely love working with vivid colors.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely been a tough road. This craft did not come as easy to me as I had anticipated. I struggled a lot with color formulations when first beginning as well as client/stylist communication. Any little thing can make or break your communication with someone. My advice for anyone starting this journey would be to sit back and DO NOT rush. I was always so worried about getting people out of my chair in a timely manner, I was rushing and not thinking about what I was actually doing.

What should we know about Velvet Hair Lounge? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As a hairstylist, you get many different types of requests, I enjoy and work more specifically with dreadlocks and dreadlock maintenance as well as color, cut, and add extensions to dreadlocks. I am also known for vivid colors and haircuts on non-dreaded hair. There are a few projects I’ve done that stand out to me, but I am most proud of the challenges I’ve overcome in my journey as a professional stylist. What I believe sets me apart from others is that I’m thorough, efficient, and I take much pride in my work.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
A mentor is a very valuable asset in any early stylists career. You can get the most out of your mentor if they are specializing in the type of service you want to work with. Make sure to take their classes, follow them on social media, and explore new avenues for growth. What has worked well for me is a strong social media presence, combined with a high traffic salon and client referrals.
