Meet Trailblazer Kristal Nanci

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristal Nanci.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I became interested in design while working as a receptionist; making greeting cards for co-workers. I then started working at a screen-printer where I began learning production design and actually getting paid to create. I wanted to learn more; to truly understand marketing and design. So, I enrolled in college and earned a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design. I started out as an intern at a local marketing firm, and upon graduation, I was hired to be the creative director full time. I got loads of on the job training, learning so much about marketing and account management. I eventually opened my own design and marketing business.

Has it been a smooth road?
it has definitely been a bumpy road, but full of learning opportunities. The biggest challenge I’ve had to face was becoming a parent and learning to balance a preemie newborn and at the same time moving my business to a new area. Learning how to tailor my business to a new demographic with newfound responsibilities as a mother was difficult.

For young women who are interested in a career in design, I would advise them to work in the industry a while to see if they truly have a passion for it, and if they are considering a degree course, I advise them to consider a business or marketing degree.

We’d love to hear more about Girl Design.
I specialize in creating conceptual design solutions and I help clients to position themselves in the most effective way in the marketplace. What sets me apart from other similar types of businesses is the level of service my clients receive. All of my designs begin with a strategy brief where I seek to understand the client’s goals, communication objectives, target demographic and competitors. I take a holistic view of the business and strive for my designs to appeal to the target and reflect the client’s message and branding.
