Meet Dmitry Troshin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dmitry Troshin.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Born in Moscow, Russia in 1990. I graduated from university as an interior designer. Had many different jobs from photographer to graphic designer and sales manager. Started tattooing in 2012 (in Russia). From 2015 traveled to many countries, tattooed pretty much everywhere. In 2017 moved to the United States. I live and work in Lake Forest (orange county) at the Vatican Studios, sponsored by a few companies such as Bishop Rotary, Nocturnal Ink, Ink-Eeze. I have clients from all over the world, some of them fly in from Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, etc. I’m also working on some other projects besides tattooing, make some art for exhibitions. I have a wife and a dog here… Not sure what else to say )

Please tell us about your art.
I love doing “story” projects. Most of my clients want to get a sleeve from me, so I do my best to put the most important and interesting things for them, make a good composition from those objects. So most of my projects reflect the lifestyle, history, heritage and family of my clients. All my projects are very detailed; I enjoy doing small tattoos as well. I also started a new technique of tattooing – I call it “3rl only” because since 2014 I only use a small needle (3 round liner) for everything. It takes much more time and patience but it allows me to put a huge amount of details into my tattoos and also this way of tattooing is less painful for my clients. A lot of artists all over the world switched to this technique since then, and I teach them how to do it right. I did my first seminar in 2016 in Moscow, another one 2018 here in California and I’m planning to do next one this autumn. I have many plans for the future, most of them I cannot unveil right now, but you will definitely hear about them soon )

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
I always recommend to beginner artists to concentrate on things and style they enjoy the most. Only by doing something new, something special you can become a big artist. You can do whatever you have to to make money, but you don’t need to put everything in your portfolio. Even if you do your stuff for free once a week, but you put all the effort in that – you can find your own style and build a good portfolio. People must recognize your works not just your name. The biggest success is when most of your clients don’t want to go to anybody else because they love what you do and trust you as an artist. Everybody wants to make money but think long term. What’s better – to make hundreds of thousands in 10-15 years by working hard for free now and becoming something bigger or work every day for a common price (if you don’t grow).

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
