Life and Work with Joanne Yahn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanne Yahn.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey as a graphic designer started as early as my elementary school days where I could only think about creating fun and funky pieces of art. This passion grew into fruition when I decided to study Design in college, and I committed to learning software, skills, and techniques to make my art functional for different needs of the clients. I would say my design style is much like my personality, unique and bold. Post undergrad, I minted myself in New York City working as a Graphic Designer and decided to continue my career out West for brighter and sunnier days.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with anything in life, nothing comes easy. I learned that the balance of finding a job that fits your creativity as well as practicality is a very fine line, and sometimes being picky is not a bad thing, My advice for other women just starting out in their journey is to focus on what is important to you, make big decisions already knowing what your expectations are, and not to settle for less. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when looking for jobs, especially starting out, but once you succumb to doing what others want from you, you’ll lose your spunk and what makes you unique. At the end of the day, there is nothing that you cannot overcome as long as you stay true, happy, and humble.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Joanne Yahn Design – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
My experience as a career-woman has been primarily focused on branding and advertisement through print and digital products. I am most proud of my ability to incorporate my artistic taste to the clients’ needs in order for the products to reach the intended level of usability. This is often tricky since people have different opinions on how a product should look, so my strong communication skills and willingness to collaborate with others have made me a valuable team member. What sets me apart from others is my patience to work through challenges and confront them through constructive dialogue, in order to satisfy all requirements.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
As a young woman, it is easy to feel like your opinions do not carry much weight in comparison to your more established colleagues. I have found myself, at times, feeling the need to mute my thoughts in order to “just do my job,” but with more experience, I have learned that people value what I have to say. I have learned that by voicing my opinions, I have gained more respect and credibility because others see that I care and have valuable input to add to the table.
