Meet Stacy Owens of The Artsy Plant

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacy Owens.

Stacy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always had a love for plants and nature. Some of my youngest childhood memories were working alongside my mom in our garden — she’d ask me to pick our strawberries and help plant flowers. I enjoyed going to the nursery with her and learning about varieties of plants. I remember the vivid colors and smells. Once when I was eight, I visited Butchart Gardens in British Columbia, Canada… it was magical!

As I got older, I maintained an appreciation for plant beauty but horticulture wasn’t the profession I chose — instead, I chose Film and Television. I graduated from the Chapman University School of Film and TV and began my career in advertising after. After some years, I left the advertising world to be a full-time mom. As a homemaker/stay-at-home mom, I enjoyed gardening once again.

When my kids were small, I’d spend most of my days in our garden with them. I designed a backyard garden with them in mind (see magazine ad photo) — it had a little tike track with an endless loop that wrapped around the garden where they could ride their trikes all day! As the kids grew older, I began to soul search. I aspired to work in a creative field again, but I couldn’t put my finger on exactly what I wanted to do. I was determined to do something “solo” and something that I was passionate about.

Eventually, I found some inspiration… I took one of those classes where you create a succulent pumpkin. It was really enjoyable and made me discover how much I miss working with my plants. I began tinkering in my garden and shopping more often at the nursery.

I began creating; making fresh succulent money tree arrangement gifts, I designed an illuminated succulent bottle, made some succulent skulls, etc. I also took a business class to help me better prepare for starting my own business. In no time at all, The Artsy Plant was created. I immediately got an opportunity from a great friend of mine named Dawn McCarthy (Dawnscorner.com) who has a segment on KCAL 9 News. She asked me if I’d like to come to help decorate her set.

When I got to the studio, I felt nostalgic… it had been years since I worked in any TV Studios. Dawn had the confidence in me to design the arrangements for three of her segments. A thrilling first gig— I had my beloved plants and was working alongside a great friend! I’m always designing new pieces, new styles, and my goal is to always be unique and different. I’ll just keep doing what I love, hopefully, keep my thumb green and an artistic eye and see where I go from here.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes. Thankfully it’s been a really smooth road.

Please tell us about The Artsy Plant.
I create unique succulent arrangements customized to enliven any event or occasion. I would say I’m best known for creating arrangements that are custom pieces you won’t find anywhere else. I feel proud to create arrangements that reflect my “customer’s vibe.” There’s a sentimental factor that comes into play… my arrangements need to be “expressive” so to speak!
