Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Fallon.
Amber, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story began while rummaging through a closet and discovering my Dad’s old Canon AE-1. I had always been mesmerized with photo albums and how they preserved time. With an old roll of film still in the camera, I set out to expose the remaining frames in this new find and – after developing the film, I was shocked to see it had images from the last weeks of a passed loved one’s life. The impact of those images had a lasting effect. At that moment, I understood the power of an image and the million words, emotions, memories it could embrace.
My curiosity about film and its ability to preserve life led me to the darkroom where I could get lost for hours mixing chemicals. It was here that I studied the overall process and learned more about creating a well-crafted, final product. Eventually, these passions led me to NYC where I attended college and began to dive deeper into the language of photography and its ability to deliver a visual message and translate emotion. During these years, my work began focusing primarily on people and the underlying themes of life.
Nowadays, I’ve switched coasts to San Diego and combined all the steps in my journey to create my own wedding and lifestyle business – doing what I dreamt of since I was a kid. I love applying the lessons of my journey to provide clients with fine art, modern approach with heartfelt style. In addition to my own company, I am also a lead photographer for one of San Diego’s top studios, True Photography.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest piece of advice I could offer is to have patience and always believe in your passions. I think the biggest misconception in business is that things will happen right away – and without struggle or setback. I’ve had countless rejections and critiques that dampened my spirits along the way but each one helped me learn something valuable and grow stronger. You can’t let the little moments deter you from the overall goal and vision if it’s what you believe in.
What should we know about Amber Fallon Photo? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Inspired by genuine moments and a love for bold colors with clean design, I love the craft of the image and people who embrace adventure and whimsy. Most of my work is based on weddings and lifestyle aiming to capture candid moments that are craft-fully made. I like to keep things fresh by experimenting with new lighting and fun techniques, allowing me to stay innovative and constantly pushing my creative eye. One of my favorite things is to play around with my knowledge of off-camera light and other in-camera effects to alter the image beyond what the eye can see. The images I create tend to have a clean, bold aesthetic with a powerful sense of emotion that captures the moment.
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
My mom’s strength and hard work taught me early on to stay focused and disciplined in whatever endeavor I took on. Her positive support was an amazing motivation to follow my dreams with a real intention and foundation.
Another role model who inspired me early on was the female art figures in my high school who offered unique perspectives and fun interpretations of art. I was fortunate to attend a magnet program for students studying performing and visual arts and was surrounded by a constant surge of creative energy. It was during this time I met my first photo teacher whose love for art gave me a well-rounded education on its history and techniques. It was in this class, I was also introduced to the work of Sally Mann who quickly became one of my biggest inspirations. Her moody, artistic exposures and poetic captures of life have always been a major influence on my work.
