Meet Trailblazer Madelyn Gordon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madelyn Gordon.

Madelyn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began my fitness journey young as a professional ballet dancer at the age of 16. I had danced for a total of 12 years before deciding to retire and attend college. Upon receiving my Bachelors Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences with an emphasis in Studio Art, I was working as an Art Gallery assistant to support the opening of the San Diego SDSU Downtown Art Gallery and decided to return to my true passion of movement by energy and transitioned into the world of yoga. I received my 200hr RYT certificate and began teaching as well as growing my personal practice. Though many amazing opportunities, I have been able to expand my knowledge and growth as well as the journey to Costa Rica and receive Advanced Training. Today, my passion is to inspire others to deepen their practice of yoga on and off their mat.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve had many challenges arise throughout my journey, particularly with my health. But rather than focus on the negative and wallow in what could or should be my path, I’ve deepened my gratitude practice and learned how it can shift and become something different throughout time. As an example, I do not gravitate to journaling so that doesn’t support me in my practice of gratitude as it may for some. Lately, I’ve been burning candles and spending time with family and friends to the ground and be present. My advice is to find what works for you, what rituals speak to you and seek gratitude from all that’s around.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I currently work as a vinyasa yoga instructor as well as teach Yoga Sculpt, the combination of yoga with weights. I am continuing my knowledge of weight training as I plan to receive my CSCS from NSCA later this year! I believe there is a shortage of personal trainers who can hybrid both worlds of weightlifting and yoga to not only shape the body but restore the mind, and I plan to be an example of how beneficial that union can be.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
Beginning ballet at the age of six has definitely set me up for success in the way that I have always been active. I don’t think it really matters what sport or activity it is, but bodies in motion stay in motion!
