Today we’d like to introduce you to Cara Paymaster.
Cara, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Ten years ago, I went to school to become a licensed esthetician for my interest in makeup-artistry and immediately became fascinated with skin biology. After graduating at the top of my class, I began working at St. Louis’s top day spa, The Face and Body. Growing up in St. Louis everyone knew The Face and Body so it was a dream come true. There, I was able to treat many skin conditions and was the lead makeup artist. Four years ago fate brought my husband and me to San Diego. Soon after moving here, my hair stylist was opening her own salon in La Jolla called Belle Sirène Salon. I came on board when the doors opened to help manage and run the day to day. I was also doing freelance makeup on location and at the salon and facials at a suite on the next street over. In March of this year, I decided to open a private studio in my neighborhood of North Park. I now offer affordable facials, chemical peels, waxing, and makeup. I wanted a private space that felt calming and relaxing while still offering serious skincare services.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting a business is always scary. How do I afford it, is it the right time, having self-doubt are all stresses I faced.
But I had a passion for skincare and working directly with clients so I new I had to create a space to make that happen for myself. I’m an Aries and we have entrepreneurial spirits. On top of working with clients, I wanted to create something. I wanted to contribute to a neighborhood that I loved in a city that I love.
To anyone creating something, have a clear vision, be organized & consistent, take your time & be patient.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Cara Paymaster Skincare, Waxing & Makeup-Artistry story. Tell us more about the business.
I treat all skin concerns including Acne, Rosacea, and Anti-aging. I offer custom facials and chemical peels. I am also a waxer with thousands of brow waxes under my belt. I love the instant satisfaction of a good clean brow wax! I also specialize in soft glam and bridal makeup.
It’s rare to see someone serious about skincare also serious about makeup. I have spent hundreds of hours on education for both. Again, the Aries in me.
I am a big fan of self-care. Each facial begins with some quiet time to enjoy a drink, a warm lavender hand towel, breathing & stretching, journaling, and a foot roller to relax before your service.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I believe women can do anything. I especially believe women are well positioned for roles in politics. A world where women are economically empowered could be a more prosperous place to live for everybody.
