Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Hess.
Nikki, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve always had a knack for creativity. When I was really young, I remember getting creative with just about anything I could get my hands on. We had this tree in our backyard that had the most beautiful yellow flowers and leaves; I used to pick them and twist them into flower crowns, then I forced my brother and sister to sell them with me on the corner – I guess I was always an entrepreneur! Of course, I loved to draw and paint, and that has always been part of me. Having a career that would allow me to express myself, creatively has always been my goal, and when I learned calligraphy in 2016, I was hoping that it was the start of that dream career. To my surprise, it was!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Although I started Lavender And Sea by selling my calligraphy, calligraphy is just a small portion of what I offer now. I’m an illustrator, a watercolor artist, a chalkboard artist and now a graphic designer (I’ve been teaching myself since the beginning of this year). At my core, I am an artist, and that can be expressed through many different mediums. I don’t like to limit myself to just one!
I love creating beautiful pieces of artwork for my clients. A large portion of my clients are couples who are getting married. I create invitations, signage, day of details for their big day… and it fills my heart with so much joy when I see their faces light up when they see my work.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
For me, success encompasses many different factors. Of course, being able to support yourself financially is huge, but it’s only a small piece of the puzzle of success. To me, success is enduring through the valleys, learning from your mistakes, bringing joy to others, and becoming a master at your craft. The greatest quality a successful person can have is the will to never give up.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
The best way to see my work is to follow me on Instagram. I post quite often, and I like to do behind the scenes stories so people can see my work in progress.
