Conversations with the Inspiring Alanna Safarik

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alanna Safarik.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Alanna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always been fascinated by hair ever since I was a kid. When I was younger, I would use markers to give myself colorful streaks in my hair! In high school, I used to cut my friends’ hair during lunch and dye it after school. When it finally clicked that this is what I was meant to do, well… it just felt perfect. I’ve always known I wanted to help people. Now, every day I get to make my guests feel confident and beautiful! I have also always loved art, which is what hair truly is. I have my paints and sculpting tools, and hair is my moving canvas

Has it been a smooth road?
Like with any new career, there is always a learning curve. Outside of just the technical side of things, what I found most important to me was the people I work with. It took me a while to find my tribe. My advice to anyone is to find an environment that builds you up. This can be a very competitive industry, so it is so important to find a squad that is as proud of you and your work as you are. A work-family should be there to love and support you on hard days and cheer for you on the best ones. To me, this was a crucial part of my business. A lot of people assume that working with mostly women is “dramatic”, but I don’t feel that way at all. Every day, I am inspired by the amazing people I work with and work on. I couldn’t dream of a better career

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Rainbows, unicorns, merpeople… I love them all! I specialize in fantasy hair colors. I love giving people hair they have always dreamed of, whether that’s pink, green, holographic, pixelated, iridescent, metallic… the list goes on. I believe that the hair on your head should be as unique as you are. My guests who get fantasy colors range from all ages, from 14 to 70. Why fit in when you can stand out? Life is way too short to have boring hair.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
I had an amazing childhood. My parents always encouraged my creativity. The first time I dyed my hair, I was eleven. My mom gave me some 90’s cap highlights in the kitchen! After that, I was totally hooked. By twelve, my hair was pink and purple. Hair was always a way for me to express myself when the teenage angst became too much. As I got older, I started using it to express my joy. I’m so grateful to have grown up with parents that let me truly embrace myself, whether that was me wearing a pink bunny costume to school or cutting my hair into a mullet (that was a look). I was never afraid to be me, and now I have a job where I can help others find their inner magic.
