Life and Work with Crystal Han

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Han.

Crystal, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always had a stable corporate job but it wasn’t until I personally got semi-permanent make-up myself (eyebrows to be exact) that sparked an interest for me to pursue the industry. I was nervous at first but with the confidence it gave me, I knew I wanted to help others feel the same. I saved up- took my first class and fell in love with it.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I believe every journey will have its bump on the road and it’s definitely all a learning experience. Starting out my own business was scary at first because I didn’t know the outcome of it all but with persistence and a great support system, I was able to build the business to where it is at today. My advice to those starting this journey is to continue learning- take advice and also criticism to improve yourself.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a semi-permanent makeup artist and specialize in microblading, ombre and combination eyebrows. Being in this industry, I’m definitely most proud of seeing my client’s reactions after they’ve gotten their brows done. Having a client leave the studio with more confidence and happiness before they walked in is an indescribable feeling. I believe being a perfectionist and my attention to detail sets me apart with providing my clients with the best service and care.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
What has worked well for me is surrounding myself with positive, motivating and passionate artists in the industry. Don’t be afraid to get out there or reach out to ask for help because you’d be surprised at how welcoming artists can be. Outside of social media, Yelp, etc. -always network wherever you go. Always carry your business card and pass it along to friends, co-workers, hairstylists.
