Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Knauff.
Tyler, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m currently 23 and was born and raised in San Diego. When I was younger, me and my mom would listen to a lot of rock music. Eventually, I started to listen to Hip Hop. At first, it was mixed in with my other favorite genres, but it quickly became the favorite. I enjoyed writing poetry and was even won a poetry contest back when I was in middle school. At about 15 years old, I started writing rap songs. I would usually start off by doing them without a beat, somewhat like poetry. For a few years, I had written songs every so often, but didn’t take it as seriously as I do now. When I reached 21, I really started to dedicate myself. I made a few tracks with some friends and posted them on Soundcloud, but never really told anybody about them. The next year, however, I released my first single, Fool’s Gold. Since releasing that song, I’ve released an eight-track mixtape, and four singles. I’ve performed at several events and connected with a large part of the San Diego underground. I’m currently working on two more projects to release. I dedicate myself to writing a song every week, whether or not I release it, to keep myself working.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So far, the road has been bumpy and smooth sailing. In my mind, it’s all part of the process. I’ve been to shows where I was supposed to perform, but the show wasn’t well coordinated, forcing me to either cut my set in half or not perform at all. Of course, I’ve dealt with haters. They usually pop out whenever I promote something on Instagram. My best advice for anyone dealing with haters is to use it as fuel for your passion. There will be plenty of people with constructive criticism, don’t take it to heart. There have been many blogs and playlists that I’ve tried submitting my music to. Many of them have rejected my songs, but there are those handfuls that have accepted them. Building fans isn’t easy either, but when you make those connections, it makes the road less bumpy. Being a musician means rolling with the punches and continuing to make good music along the way.
T. Ka$h Music – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m currently an independent underground San Diego Hip Hop artist that specializes in making good music. I pride myself in my unique writing style. I make my music sound catchy without sacrificing the lyricism that goes behind writing my songs. I also work to stand out whenever I perform. Some would say I’m a different person on stage. It’s because I have such a passion for the art of Hip Hop. I market myself a lot, pushing my music to other places in the world other than San Diego. I have a few international fans that I keep in contact with. I believe in expanding beyond San Diego so that more attention can be brought to our Hip Hop scene.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far was being offered to join a label. It happened after I had performed at the Salty Frog in Imperial Beach. The label head was a friend of the one who put the show together and was there to support. After the show was over, he approached me. He told me about his label and told me to hit him up on Instagram. I did, and from there, I had my first meeting with the label head. Since then, I’ve been participating in a few meetings with the label. At this moment, I’m waiting to officially sign on. When I do, it’ll be a huge goal that I’ve accomplished early in my career.
