Conversations with the Inspiring Megan McLaughlin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan McLaughlin.

Megan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I had always been searching for a creative outlet and after a few failed pottery classes I decided to try silversmithing at Whaley Studios in Hillcrest. I quickly learned to love the process and being able to work with my hands to create something unique and beautiful. What started as a hobby, and honestly still is, sort of turned into a very small business that I really enjoy growing.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Silversmithing itself can be a slow process, there are a lot of steps and opportunity for failure. My biggest struggle was and still is, patience. A piece won’t create itself overnight and will ultimately be worse if you rush through it. I also love my weekly classes, although I have learned so much and am utilizing those skills independently, the opportunity to work with other like-minded women and bounce ideas, information, vendors, etc. off each other is inspiring. My best advice is not to let the fear of failing prevent you from trying something new.

What should we know about Jewelry by MACO? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
In starting this process, I discovered there can be quite a bit of wasted material. I wanted to try to be as conscience and resourceful as possible when creating my pieces so I could feel just as good when giving them a home. I started with melting down some of my old jewelry to create my very first bezel set ring for my best friend as a Christmas gift. Since then, I have only used recycled materials to create each design. I am proud to offer quality jewelry that is sustainably crafted with love.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I honestly believe our biggest barrier is not being open-minded to change. Just because that is the way that “it has always been done” does not mean it’s the right way or the way that it should be done. My 9-5 is in the Maritime Industry which is traditionally a male saturated field. I am challenged every day to change other’s mindsets and cultivate a new cycle of leadership.
