Meet Trailblazer Chanet Mottern

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chanet Mottern.

Chanet, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I didn’t get into makeup until high school, I remember to this day my first prestige brand eye shadow was called “boy toy”by Too Faced and one side was white and the other was hot pink and I remember my mom telling me “you better wear this every day”; the funny thing is I did and I got creative with it. I started doing makeup on myself for fun in the middle of the night; when I couldn’t sleep. I then started doing makeup on friends in high school for school dances. It was always just fun to me and I never knew it could be a career.

When I graduated, I was going to college as a photography/business major. My mom was the one who noticed a talent and asked me if I wanted to attend school for makeup in Los Angeles. I agreed, not really knowing what I was getting into! I started classes and my teacher kept saying I was a natural talent! I started to study different looks and practice them and before I knew it, I was booking freelance wedding jobs. I then went into the beauty retail world working for many high-end makeup and skincare brands. There, I gained a love for the skin and decided to attend esthetics school at Bellus Poway Academy! I knew very early that once I finished I wanted my own business! After school, I had an opportunity to train and learn how Dior beauty does their luxury facials in their spas they have in Paris, France. I worked for them while continuing to do makeup for weddings, for photo shoots and started a small waxing business in Los Angles. Soon after I found out I was going to have a son and it wasn’t until I had him and became a full-time single mom, where my mind framed completely changed to “what am I waiting for”. I wanted to have the freedom to be there for him as much as I could while he grew up.

I moved to San Diego; I started training in microblading, lots of long hours of studying and practicing, I started forming a business plan, creating a website and a business name. I landed on Transformation beauty studio inspired by my love for butterflies for their transformation they take on from a caterpillar, transforming peoples appearance and because it’s was where I was in life at a cross roads of transformation. I started looking for a spot and I once I found it, I signed my lease and here I am almost a year later! I have been blessed with many repeat clients, referrals, people who drive and fly from other cities and states. It has been humbling and I feel very blessed. I wouldn’t be here without GOD, my son who is my why, my mom, my dad, my brother and family who have been there supporting me and helping so much along the way!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Oh, I wish I could say it has been a smooth road. It definitely has not been! There has always been some obstacle at every phase. I worked my whole way through esthetics school; to pay for my monthly payments, I was always so tired and studied flashcards during all my shifts. When I trained in microblading, I had a 1 and a half-year-old who needed my attention 24/7. I would stay up long nights watching videos and practicing. When I opened my studio, I was a single mom who just jumped for it even without a full clientele, so I had many slow weeks when I first opened. Most people thought I was crazy but I didn’t care to me I was going to make it happen because this was my dream. There are days that are long and challenging still. My current biggest struggle is managing working and being there for my son. I opened my studio to have the freedom to be with him but with any new business it needs nourishing and attention; so I am away more than I would like at the moment however I do know there is an end goal and it won’t be this way always. Owning a business is not a piece of cake every day but when it’s your purpose you keep moving forward, learning, evolving it’s all worth it, each up and each down!

My advice is to start a journey with something you truly have a passion for, there will be so many ups and downs that you need to have a strong desire for what you are trying to achieve and have a solid “why” to keep you pushing during hard times. A solid “why” that makes quitting not an option. Do not be afraid to take risks and getting out of your comfort zone. You will never know where you can go if you never start. See each challenge as the first step to a transformation making you stronger and better prepared for what’s to come.

We’d love to hear more about Transformation Beauty Studio.
I am a licensed esthetician, double certified makeup artist, and certified microblade artist. I believe plants heal so my studio is plant-based. I use toxic Ingredient free skincare and essential oil/plant-based products for all my skincare treatments. My specialty is to get down to the root of a skin issue you may be having and fix it! I want to protect the moisture barrier of the skin causing little to no harm to it! I’ve been specializing in brow corrections rather it’s from bad microblading work or trying to rehabilitate your natural brows to grow in and create a better shape. I use fragrance-free, dye-free preservative-free wax and slowly switching over to plant-based microblading pigment. I do makeup for all occasions, my goal is to always enhance your already their beauty and not hide it. I want each and every person to come through my door one way and to leave another, rather than be more relaxed, motivated, distressed, clearer/glower skin, new brows, or a new makeup look; my hope is that there is a combination of transformation made by the end of your service. I love how my clients know I’m there for them and they feel comfortable texting any issues, questions or update me on their life’s events.

To be told that my studio is one of their favorite places to come or that they feel so safe when they enter my doors is more rewarding than anything. My 3-year-old son goes around telling everyone “we help people” and tells people I’m a “doctor”, that just warms my heart; because what makes me love what I do more than anything is the smile on my clients faces, the messages they send me of how happy they are, or how a conversation inspired them or sparked something in them to go off and start their own business. I just love my clients and I too get inspired by them. They become family and I wouldn’t want it any other way, I am excited to see them for their next service. This is why I continue to want to grow and reach more people.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
My mom raised both my brother and me on the belief that we are not of this world and that through God anything is possible. I was never raised to think I needed to be a certain profession to be successful. We are all here for a purpose and if you are aware of it, then it’s a no brainier of what you are set out to do! I always knew that I would be my own boss one day I didn’t know of what or when but I knew. When I started esthetics school, it all became clear of what I was going to do. The first step to being successful is your mindset that you already are and let the path unfold to match your thoughts along the way. I grew up knowing what you pray for, what energy and words you put out into the atmosphere comes to past so be very careful what you project.
