Conversations with the Inspiring Kristina Acosta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristina Acosta.

Kristina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Since I was young, I always knew I was meant to be a leader. I was an only child and adopted, so independence and a sense of identity came easy. I had dreams to pursue fashion – and I attended Mesa College from 2013-2016 and studied Fashion Marketing and Merchandising. During this time, I spearheaded multiple projects, including fashion shows and photoshoots, culminating in a part-time position with San Diego Model Management. While working for the agency, I assisted with the La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival which proved to be a highlight of my career. I had every intention of pursuing my dreams of working in visual merchandising and fashion marketing, but the premature death of my mother in 2014 prevented me from being able to move away from the city, and I instead focused on a career in Hospitality in order to stay in San Diego and close to my father. After 6 years of working in hotels, I am now a Front Office Supervisor for Marriott- and well on my way of achieving my goal of regional management.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No journey is easy. Again, my mother’s death forced me on a different path – one I had no real international of following until her passing. It’s funny how life works that way. Additionally, working in a male-dominated field provides its own challenges, and being a woman of color only furthers this. I’ve never let this get to me, and I make it a point to take up space and make my voice heard. My biggest piece of advice to any and all women would be to do the same. Speak up. Voice your opinions and thoughts. Take up space! Speak even when not spoken to. Offer your opinions and ideas even if not asked. We don’t need permission to exist and participate!

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
Hospitality- specifically hotels/concierge services- is such a fun and exciting field to work in for extroverts such as myself! Getting to meet and speak with people from all walks of life from every corner of the globe… it’s amazing! I’m mostly known for my unique look and exceptional customer service! At my hotel, we have numerous guests who stay with us frequently, and I am their most familiar face! It’s important to be unforgettable.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I’m a huge fan of classic novels and texts. I read ‘The Art of War’ annual, as I believe the principles can be applied to everyday life. Whenever I feel down, I read ‘Memories of a Geisha’ to remind myself that what I consider to struggle can be considered trivial to others. I make it a point to stay up-to-date on all political and social issues through news apps and profiles
