Life and Work with Shelley Sass

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelley Sass.

Shelley has been transforming interiors since 2000 and has personally had the exciting opportunity of overseeing the building of two of her very own family homes over the last 10 years, one in Australia and the other in San Diego. Shelley has a valued team of trusted and reliable tradespeople that she works with on a continued basis.

Born in South Africa, Shelley has lived around the world – a key influence in the ever-evolving eclectic, textural, cozy and delightful looks that she is known for. Inspired by her mother and grandmother, both exceptionally talented seamstresses, Shelley was creative from a young age and has always had a love for decor, fashion, and art. Shelley studied Interior Design and Fashion Design in South Africa, Australia, and San Diego, and as a result, has developed a passion for design from different cultures and eras. Shelley started out in the Fashion Design arena where she owned and operated her own business in South Africa for many years. After immigrating to San Diego, Shelley experienced a brief stint in the corporate world. Whilst enjoying that world, after a few years, her creativity took over and she was drawn back into the design world but this time with Interiors.

Today, Shelley Sass Designs is a full-service Interior Design, Remodeling E-Design and Home Staging firm, assisting clients worldwide with a wide variety of home improvement related issues including: collaborating with builders, selection of furniture, fabric, lighting, accessories, flooring and window treatments, re-upholstery, space planning, 3D rendering, painting and designing custom pieces.

Shelley’s mission is all about creating a space that is beautifully pleasing both aesthetically and practically. She wants every space that she plays a part in to be truly loved by its owner. She wants her clients to walk into their homes and feel love, pride, contentment, and pure joy! The results of her work should enable each individual’s style to emerge into a design that will inspire and promote their well-being.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My main piece of advice is perseverance. Nothing comes easy, and the world of Interior Design is no different from a lot of competition. If you put in the hours every day, and I’m a firm believer that hard work always pays off. You just need to keep going and keep at it. If there is a way to differentiate yourself from the rest, create a niche for yourself which will allow you to stand out from the crowd, that is always a good thing. Obviously, besides all this, as in every business, an Interior Designer needs to be efficient, reliable, trustworthy, honest and upfront with clear communication. Clients like to know how their dollars are being spent, and they want to know that they are getting what they pay for.

Please tell us about Shelley Sass Designs.
I work in most fields of Interior Design ranging from kitchen and bathroom remodels, to whole-house remodels. I assist with furniture selection, I do space planning, window treatments, flooring, painting, landscaping, color consultation, 3D rendering, closet design, garage doors and more. The services that I do not personally perform myself are provided by fully vetted tradespeople with whom I have developed close alliances. I help select architectural details and finishes, collaborating with architects and builders.

I think what I am most proud of as a brand is my customer service and always putting the needs of my customers first. I am efficient, reliable and trustworthy, and do my best to communicate effectively on the front end so that there are no misunderstandings on the back end. I place huge value on happy and satisfied clients, and that is the reason for the many referrals that I receive. Please read some of my reviews here: https://www.houzz.com/browseReviews/shelleysass/shelley-sass-designs

In addition to this, I follow industry news and read and research a lot, so that I am up to date on trends and happenings in the industry. To this end, I attend many industry-related events, and this facilitates my ever-expanding knowledge of products, services, and new inventions.

Who have you been inspired by?
My mother, my aunty, and my cousin – they all encouraged me, built me up and taught me the value of hard work and perseverance.

Tricia Guild from Designers Guild – I have always loved her style and her designs.
Any women in history who were not afraid to stand up for their rights and their beliefs!
