Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlynn Cerveny.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story starts with #homebirth.
Once I discovered the world of natural birth, midwifery, breastfeeding, and babywearing, I completely immersed myself in the ‘crunchy’ community after having two beautiful homebirths, myself. I followed the hashtags, went to local meetups and events and made new friends-something moms can never have enough of!
At five months postpartum with my second daughter, I began shedding handfuls and handfuls of hair. I didn’t know this was a thing! I had not seen anyone talk about postpartum hair loss before on social media, but the amount of hair I was losing was alarming. A friend that I had found through the homebirth hashtag shared a before and after photo from her naturally-based haircare products she had been using to help with postpartum shedding, and I was intrigued! I knew my hair would grow back eventually, but I was SO embarrassed when I pulled my hair back in a bun-which is basically a staple for moms! My hairline was gone.
Something else that piqued my interest, even more, was that as a stay at home mom and photographer, she had also been able to add another stream of income to her household with her shampoo business.
I had been out of the workforce for two years at this point so that I could raise my girls and stay home with them, and at the time I was flipping furniture on OfferUp to make a few hundred dollars every month.
A lot of hours. A lot of overhead. A lot of hard work. Away from my family.
I just knew that this was the perfect opportunity for me. I could grow my hair back, and make some money at the same time.
But, I was SO NERVOUS.
I had never worked in sales before. I had never had any marketing training. I had never even done a live video before. I had zero social media following. I had no idea what I was doing, and I announced my journey to the world by sharing the most embarrassing photo I had ever taken of my hair. It’s fine.
I stayed up late and worked my business after my full-time job as a stay at home mom, recorded live videos while babywearing, and learned as much as I could about postpartum shedding/hair loss.
After one month, my hairline filled in.
After one year, that growth turned into really cute postpartum bangs.
My physical transformation has been incredible, but what I never expected to happen from a bottle of shampoo was the number of women my story has impacted.
I have had the opportunity to help over 150 women with their hair concerns, in three different countries!
I lead a team of over 50 women, working this business alongside me.
And so many have found me, through hashtags.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Getting out of your comfort zone is never easy. I was so scared and so nervous to share my journey with the world! And these photos have literally gone viral. I’ve faced skeptics, I’ve been criticized, someone even told me my before and after was ‘fake’.
Also learning how to work a business, how to lead a team, how to market-it’s all a learning process! Remember-every expert started as a beginner! Focus on progress, not perfection!
My advice is to always remember that you have a purpose. You are starting your own journey for a reason, so never forget your ‘why’. Think about all of the lives that you are impacting by showing up every day and being brave.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am an influencer for a naturally based, anti-aging haircare and skincare company. Our products are Vegan, Cruelty-Free, and backed by science.
I am the ‘Postpartum Hair Loss Boss’. I specialize in hormonal thinning and hair loss concerns. However, I have been able to help men and women that have suffered from hair loss due to other reasons such as extreme stress, dramatic weight loss, thyroid issues, and changes in medication. Our hair shedding can be the result of a number of things, and what our products do is increase hair density by 46%.
One thing that I have learned over the last 14 months in this business is that people do not buy from those that are the most experienced, they buy from and trust people that have experienced their pain. I think what has set me apart from others is that I have shared my hair loss journey and remained authentic from day one. I shared my ‘before’ picture the day that I started my business. I shared my first wash and my first progress picture. I’ve shared my story. Especially in video!
The thing that I am most proud of is that I have proven to myself and my team that if you believe in yourself, you can truly accomplish anything. Before I started my business, I used to tell people that I was ‘just a stay at home mom’. I didn’t have any experience in sales, I wasn’t tech-savvy, and I felt unqualified to make big moves. Those excuses didn’t stop me! I am a stay at home mom, AND Mentor/Founder in the fastest growing premium hair care company in North America.
