Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Restivo.
Joseph, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story begins back in high school where I was heavily into computer Science. After graduating, I decided to get involved in computers. All my friends went into the real estate and mortgage business. Our friend’s dad owned a very large mortgage broker business. After owning a local computer consulting company, I decided to try out the mortgage business. When you are in the computer industry, you don’t really get as much human interaction as you do in a sales or service position.
I think that’s why I gravitated towards mortgage and real estate. I naturally like to deal with people. All my friends were already in the business, and I knew all the lingo so it was a very easy transition. I was doing computer consulting for about three years before I decided to make the switch. So in early 2004, I made the switch and became a mortgage loan officer after helping my friend processes loans for about six months.
In 2005 using my technology background, I started to develop my own websites and generate my own leads. Later that year I started my own brokerage which I ran until 2007 and then turned it into a small California mortgage bank. In 2010 I sold that company and decided to go back to originating mortgages instead of running the company. In the third quarter of 2018, I took a step back. I made a list of all the challenges within our industry and focused on bringing new solutions to the mortgage business. That is when the new company was born.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road with all the governmental changes. The industry, as you probably know, went through a financial collapse. There’s been extreme ups and downs throughout our industry that affected me personally.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
After figuring out solutions to the problems that are part of our industry, I decided to come up with a very unconventional way of running a mortgage bank. We are a 100% employee-owned ESOP. We’ve also figured out way to cut out a lot of expenses and bureaucracy. All the employees of American Mortgage Network partake in the success of the company.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Our core mission as a 100% employee-owned company is to take care of all of our people. Their success is our success. And our customers benefit as well.
