Today we’d like to introduce you to Keeley Miller.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey began as most creative businesses do – with a love and passion for creating art.
Since 2012, I have photographed women and families of all ages, backgrounds, shapes and sizes. Although I began in commercial fashion, I first became known for my work with high school seniors. I built my business in my hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana before relocating and relaunching my photography business in San Diego in October 2019.
I am proud to offer all of my clients a unique, custom experience with me that they can cherish forever. A session with me is more than just a photoshoot – it is a one-on-one experience where we work together from initial concept to hanging your custom art on your walls. I want to create something truly special for all of my clients that they can see and touch every day, from Italian leather albums to stunning metal prints for their walls. I always work to bring my services to where I began, by creating art for everyone who steps in front of my lens.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not – but the best journeys never are!
I first began my photography journey at a very young age. I was 13 years old when I photographed my first paying client. Only a couple years later, I was photographing weddings on my own (yes, I was 15!). Looking back, I have no idea how my clients placed that level of trust into me, but I am so grateful that they did.
As a young female business owner, one of the most difficult obstacles I have faced in my business is self-worth and value. Owning a business can be intimidating, especially in regards to pricing. It took me a long time to understand the cost of running a business and how to value myself and my work in order to charge appropriately to provide the luxury service that I wanted to create.
All of our journeys are different, and that is okay. Go ahead and make mistakes. Learn from them, grow, and make yourself better. It is a long road that can be difficult and lonely, but if you keep picking yourself back up when you fall down, you will climb mountains.
Please tell us about Keeley Miller Photography.
My portrait work primarily centers around women, high school seniors, and families. I am known for creating internationally award-winning contemporary portraits that showcase the beauty, power, and love of my clients, but the true experience is being able to create stunning prints and products that can be displayed and passed down for generations. I love being able to work with all of my clients from start to finish to design their dream photo shoot and then to be able to hang it on their walls for them to see every day.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
The value of networking and community can never be overstated. After recently moving my business from Indianapolis to San Diego, being able to find a community in my new city is so important and special to me.
The first step is simply showing up. Join organizations or groups that inspire you, find ways to be a member of your community. All you have to do from there is be yourself. Introduce yourself, meet new people, and have fun!
