Meet Kelly and Chris Short of Airdale Productions in Poway

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly and Chris Short.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Chris and I met when we lived in Rochester, New York. I was a reporter and he was a photojournalist for the local Fox station. We worked together for several years before moving out to San Diego. In Rochester, I went back to school for my Master’s and eventually left television for a career in Corporate Communications. Once in San Diego, Chris worked as a photojournalist for Fox and CW6, and I worked on the agency side for (W)right On Communications, and then I went in-house for a global retail services company leading their Corporate Communications efforts for about eight years. I had the opportunity to manage everything from public relations to employee communications, and strategic communications through multiple mergers and acquisitions.

Chris launched Airdale after a successful career in television news. From markets including Rochester, NY; Cleveland, OH and San Diego, CA Chris has covered news and world events ranging from breaking news, wildfires, crime, extreme drought, brutal snowstorms, human interest stories, government and environmental issues. Chris is a four-time Emmy Award-winning videographer and photojournalist and he started Airdale in 2006 while he was still at CW6 in San Diego.

Prior to his career in television, Chris joined the US Navy as an Aviation Warfare Systems Operator. His service gave him the opportunity to live and work around the world, including Iceland, England, Italy, Puerto Rico and Ecuador. Chris earned an Air Medal, a Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal, a Kosovo Campaign Medal, and various other ribbon and service medals during his service. In addition to his main duty as Acoustical Analyst, Chris was an official photographer for his squadron and was officially recognized by the Navy for some of his photography work.

Has it been a smooth road?
I think anyone who has started their own business can relate to the many unexpected struggles small business owners face. In running your own business, you are the one accountable for everything, not just the creative elements. From payroll to marketing and business development. It has been a process of trials and errors in many cases, but we’ve also learned so much along the way.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Airdale Productions – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
For us, it’s all about satisfying our clients. What makes us proudest is when we complete the client’s vision, come full circle with videos or photos that exceed their expectations, and then get feedback from them that they love the work. The attention to detail in our projects is what separates us and sets us apart from others. We really love to get into the project and provide the client with little touches that add up to a big payoff.

We are also proud to say that Airdale is both a certified small business and a certified veteran-owned organization. Whenever we can, we support local businesses and military personnel.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We love living in San Diego! Having lived all over the world, San Diego definitely offers a young family like ours plenty to do — from the beach and the Zoo to being a short drive from snow in Big Bear during the winter months. We love the Poway school district for our daughter, too. The hardest part though is probably the distance we are from family. Everyone is located along the East Coast, so we travel there as much as we can.
